Thank you for your video. I think that Japan is 'reasonable'. I'd choose that word over 'cheap' or 'expensive'. In my experience, it's kind of in the middle. If you're a traveler, hotels are in the middle. You can get a room for under $100 USD per night, and that's kind of the biggest costs I think. For plane tickets, for some reason, flights out of Los Angeles were $700 cheaper than out of San Francisco, so I'd highly recommend looking into different airport options (I have no idea about prices from other countries).
Food is not cheap, but it's not expensive. A Big Mac is 450 yen. You can buy a sandwich at a konbini for 350, an onigiri for about 140, and a full course meal at an izakaia will run you about $30. If you're traveling as a tourist, expect to spend $5-10 per meal on a budget. Drinks, uh, $2 for a fizzy citrus drink at a konbini, $3 for a beer. $6 at a bar. If you order a beer at a restaurant, expect it to come in a tiny glass. If you get 'nomihodai', expect that you'll get watered down chuhi for an hour (and you can pay extra for it to include beers, but it's not included in the base price, and they'll bring you tiny ones slowly, so it's hard to get your money's worth) – not worth it.
So what is good? Local bakeries, including the ones at the train stations. Convenience store fried chicken. Local vegetables. I have tons of tips for living here, but for travelers, I think the main things I'd say are: Nomihodai (all you can drink for an hour) is generally a scam, regular prepared food is reasonably priced and don't turn your nose up at the train station food because it's pretty good, WATCH OUT for things like door charges and table charges because many places will rip you off and tourists are their target (aw, not in Japan – YES, absolutely in Japan), an izakaiya might rip you off but there's nothing you can do about it so expect to pay $30 regardless of what your order, and there's almost always a cheap katsu noodle place at the train station where you can get a meal for under $3. Don't overpay for noodles. You can definitely spend $20 on a bowl of ramen… if you want. Why would you do that though? You could have had a tiny portion of steak, beef tongue, or some kind of sea creature. Or, go to conveyor belt sushi. It's pretty good, and pretty cheap. Or, get regular sushi. It'll run you $30-40, but it'll be really good.
It's golden week. We don't get a lot of breaks here, so I felt like I had to travel despite the true things said about not doing that. I got a local 5 day train pass for ~$200, one trip to Tokyo and back recoups that, and that puts me in a situation where I'm in the train system, with no car. Taxis are NOT cheap in Japan, but the transportation infrastructure is relatively cheap and good.
Sorry I missed this livestream! Crazy day at work again!! 🤪
Coming from Korea i found our currency was worth a tad more but some things there are definitely more expensive
I found a 30 a night hotel Tavinos Manga hotel and that i found extremely affordable 😊
Yeah, for meeting in Oct. Hope to see you
I am from norway. And for me, japan is VERY cheap. Resturant in japan has the same price as a very cheap homecook meal in norway
