Susukino is Sapporo’s entertainment district and is very typical of entertainment districts in most big cities in Japan with their sensory overload of neon signs, advertisement screens and billboards. Walking towards and entering Susukino Station of the Sapporo Municipal Subway, one can see another feature unique to Japan: The subway station sports, among other things, all kinds of pubs (Izakaya), food stalls, a hairdresser(!) and a batallion of vending machines before you actually reach the faregates. Plus, it’s amazingly clean and safe for a subway station – let alone such a complex one in a somewhat “raunchy” area. Sapporo, Japan, August 20th, 2012.
