The line we’re looking at today was originally two lines, built and run by separate operators. The Spiez – Erlenbach railway was opened in 1897, after the Thunerseebahn between Thun and Interlaken had been inaugurated in 1893. The line aimed to link markets, especially the trading of livestock in Erlenbach with other parts of Europe.

In 1902, a second railway company (EZB) built a railway from Erlenbach to Zweisimmen, where a narrow gauge connection would be opened in 1905 to Montreux. In 1942, the two companies merged, before merging with the BLS in 1997.

As with most of the Swiss network, freight traffic has seen a decline over the past decades, with currently only 1 or two stations still being served on the line. There is an hourly commuter train serving all stations and also an hourly RegioExpress, which couples to the RegioExpress from Brig in Spiez and continues as one train to Bern – thus allowing the direct connection to Bern from Zweisimmen. The line is also part of the Goldenpass service, which is a connection from Montreux directly to Interlaken, with special coaches that can are adaptable for both gauges.

At the start of our journey, you’ll see the Niesen summit to the left, a popular destination for tourists that allows a panoramic view of a large part of the Bernese highlands. The Lötschberg line runs in the valley on the other side of this mountain. In a future video, we’ll be boarding a funicular that will take us all the way to the peak, from the valley station in Mülenen.

  1. So beautiful. My dad had a 32 m² room in the annex where he built a large model railway. 12 trains could drive around, fully automated. Märklin HO, with houses from Faller, Kibri and Vollmer. In the middle he made a fake canal with an industry zone in the back and a city centre near the front. On the right was an urban zone and on the left was this meadowland with a mountain with tunnels in the far left corner. This ride reminded me of those meadows. I felt like the kid I was back then, riding through his model world. Only for real and looking far better than the views in what is left from my childhood memories, now more than fifty years ago. Thanks for these wonderful scenes.

  2. Good afternoon. I love watching your videos so much. I especially love the way that locomotive "sings" as it rolls along the rails. Have a great day. Thanks.

  3. Thank You!! I'm always so excited when a new video pops up! Thanks so much from the very flat tropical part of the world where I am, as I get so much pleasure from watching these!! You are my favourite channel on YT🤩🚆

    Merci pour le partage. 🙏
    C'est toujours un véritable plaisir.👍
    @+👋

  6. I thoroughly enjoyed this production of the cab ride. Beautiful scenery through the Swiss countryside. Greenery everywhere, luscious meadows, and cows grazing. Lovely hamlets seen everywhere along the track. In particular, I enjoyed the view of the mountains capped with snow on both sides of the track. Switzerland must be closest place to heaven. I want to die there…

  7. This was beautiful. Gorgeous scenery, the communities were beautiful also. Like all your vids, this was simply wonderful. Only complaint, was to dang short. But still, you are awesome. Thank you for sharing.

  8. Wonderful video. I have ridden this line and it is nice to see it from the cab perspective. My wife’s parents lived to the left of this route, on the other side of Niesen, near Reichenbach. I am very familiar with this area. So beautiful. 🇨🇭

  9. Absolutely beautiful! How about adding temperature information? Helps with imagining being there.😁

  10. Hallo, wieder mal eine wunderschöne Mitfahrt und Strecke. 👍🏻👍🏻 Dankeschön fürs Mitnehmen und viele Grüße in die Schweiz. 🙋🏼‍♂️

  11. To be honest, I travel on video channels all over the world via YouTube, I don't impose myself, I haven't seen another channel like yours that covers travel as well as yours. I have subscribed to you for this for a long time, thank you from the bottom of my heart-!

  12. My Goodness !! Danke(Thank you very much) Team. Nice country side view with snow clad mountains😀

  13. Seeing that the gauge changing section is blocked makes me wonder if the problems encountered are being corrected?

  14. A great journey, but where was everybody? I only saw two people walking together on a path, but not a single person on the stations, or anywhere else. Except in cars.
