We loved trekking through the jungle in North Sumatra, Bukit Lawang! It was a trip I will never forget!
– We stayed at Hill Top Resort, an amazing place. Each room had a hammock outside which had a stunning view of the jungle and town.
– We trekked with two of the guys from the hill top resort – Wawan and Rashid. These two men were brilliant guides, they knew so much about the orangutangs and would do anything to help us out. We felt like we became good friends with them at the end!
– We planned to stay 2 nights in the jungle but due to two of us getting Salmonella we only stayed 1. You stay in a man made shelter in the jungle, and are given a roll mat. I would recommend taking a mosquito net and some kind of sleeping bag.
– We saw so many orangutangs, it’s quite n emotional experience! We saw a mother with her baby, a large male, another female, a third female (mina), and then another younger one at the second camp.
– Mina is known for attacking guides, but I didn’t feel at risk during this trek at all – I feel the guides would do anything to protect us.
– At the end of the trek you are offered the chance to get back to the town via the river. They large tie inner tubes together which you then sit inside, it was so fun!
If you have the chance to visit Bukit Lawang, please do. You will never forget it.
