Shinto Shrine

The Shrine is truly a classical wonder and famous for being built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane and is one of the main shrines dedicated to Tenjin, Fukuoka the deified form of Michizane.
The shrine is quite big and it spans over 3,000 acres (12 km2) and includes several other structures. The main shrine (or Honden), was constructed by Yasuyuki Umasake in the year 905, two years after the death of Michizane. A larger structure was constructed by the Fujiwara clan in 919 but was destroyed in a fire during a civil war. The Momoyama-style shrine visitors see today and are definitely a classic and beautiful shrine and it dates from 1591 and is an Important Cultural Property to this very day. Being the God of money and wealth, every 1st of the new year and just a few months later until the end of January people will go and give offerings in exchange for more wealth, prosperity as well as parents wishing their child the best of luck in their studies and the hopes of them going to a good school and beyond.
