D: Hey, did you know that the Hamamatsu Festival is coming up soon?
M: Ya, I’m so excited about that!
D: The festival hasn’t been held for two years due to the pandemic, but it restarted last year.
M: Ya, I went last year. It was really fun.
D: The Hamamatsu Festival is one of the largest festivals in Shizuoka prefecture, isn’t it? It’s usually held annually in early May, right?
M: That’s correct, from May 3rd to 5th.
D: It’s so cool that the festival has a history dating back over 450 years and it looks like it’s a proud tradition of the city.
M: Wow, that’s a long history!
D: It’s a celebration of the city’s history and culture.
M: I remember one event, Takoagegassen.
D: Ah yes. We call it the Kite Flying Competition in English.
M: Kite Flying Competition. Got it.
D: That’s the festival’s main event. I heard that it was established during the Edo period and became even more popular during the Meiji period. There is a custom that has spread throughout the Enshu region of flying the first kite to hope for the growth of the child.
M: Oh, I didn’t know that. The kites used in the competition are huge, right?
D: Yes, they can range from about 3 to 6 meters wide. Look at this kite!
M: Wow, it’s massive and beautifully decorated!
D: Ya, it’s made from bamboo and Japanese traditional paper called washi. The competition itself is a unique and exciting spectacle, where teams of kite flyers compete to knock each other’s kites out of the sky.
M: I remember the kite flyers were very passionate about the competition, it was thrilling to watch.
M: We also have another event at night called Goten Yatai Hikimawashi.
D: Yes, it’s also a traditional event that is held during the Hamamatsu Festival. It involves the pulling of floats, known as “Goten Yatai,” through the streets of Hamamatsu City.
M: The floats are huge and beautifully decorated with intricate carvings, paintings, and decorations.
D: That’s right. Teams of people pull the floats through the streets using long ropes to guide them along the route.
D: This year, the festival is featuring the actor Jun Matsumoto as a guest.
M: Yes, he’s the main actor of the Taiga Drama “Dosuru Ieyasu“!
D: He’ll be joining the festival on the last day, May 5th. The horseback warrior procession will take place from Zaza City Hamamatsu, located in the city center. He will appear dressed up as Tokugawa Ieyasu, a historical figure.
M: What time will it be held?
D: The procession will be held from 2 to 4 PM.
M: Let’s go check it out!
D: Great. I wanted to take part in all the festival events again this year!
D: Before the festival, I have several days off, so I’m actually planning to visit the Yokohama area in Kanagawa prefecture.
M: Oh, I’ve heard of Yokohama before. It’s a famous tourist spot, right?
D: Yes, it is. I’ve been wanting to go there for a long time. Do you want to come with me?
M: Sure, why not!
