It is well-known that the current Nagano Prefecture was once a place of severe turmoil and conflict during the Sengoku warring states period in the 15th and 16th centuries, when warring lords fiercely fought against each other to defend or expand their territories. Among these warriors, the most notable include the Takeda, Uesugi, Toyotomi, Tokugawa, and Sanada clans. As a result of this period, there are many ruins of distinguished castles, mainly from the Sengoku period to the Edo period, scattered throughout the prefecture. Here are a couple of great castles (or ruins) in the prefecture, which have, and will continue to attract large numbers of visitors and display their magnificent histories.
