Today’s video is part of a longer upmarket vs budget hotel review that I’m working on so I’d like to say a big thank you to the sponsor of the video, Dion Chapman!

Want to know where the best hotel Thai food is in Bangkok? I’ve got you covered! Today I’m at Bangkok ’78, the onsite restaurant at Vignette Collection: Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok to try their retro Thai menu.

I would say, for my personal preference for restaurants (think the opposite of a 3 star Michelin) this would be up there with some of the nest hotel food I’ve had in Thailand.

The menu is great, with some pimped up versions of Thai classic dishes and the prices are’t dissimilar to what you’d pay in a Thai seafood restaurant in Bangkok. Bangkok ’78 is a great place, in my opinion, to take family or friends that don’t want street food but still want a legit Thai food experience in a nice but not overly stuffy environment.

I would definitely say that the Gaeng Pu Bai Chaplu and the Pad Woonsen Naem were the two must eat dishes. The Pad Moo Nam Liap (Chinese olives with minced pork) was also a standout.

Not Thai street food but even I need some aircon sometimes!

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!

I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.

If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

  1. Helpful video, thank you Gary. Would love to see you check out some of the hotels over on the Thonburi side, maybe some close to good eating spots so we can see how easy it is to visit the best places.

  2. Back on the beers Gary? Now you are tempting me to open a Singha but I’ve already had six beers and was stoned earlier eating a 60mg THC cookie to celebrate 4/20 day. Excellent upload by the way

  3. We just returned for a few months of travelling through Thailand and neighbouring countries. Although the food is delicious, if you can't tolerate fried or sugary food I found there to be limitations. Basically eat plain rice or noodles (not appealing) nor great in large quantities. I would live for you to do a video on thai foods that aren't fried or laden with a sauce.

  4. Hi Gary, thank you for this. Brings back great memories of this hotel. We were here about a week after we met you in Talat Phlu. What a great hotel. We agree with your review. Thanks!!

  5. lmfao, at least i know finely is going to give you his honest opinion. sure his palate may not be as versed as yours @garybutler but finely can be brutally honest. i am the same way. i give reviews in my area and if it deserves 5 stars i will give it but if they deserve 3 stars you bet i will let them know exactly how i feel. heres a name for finely's future youtube channel, finelybutler "the honest cook".

  6. You should show us the bad food experiences as well Gary that you mentioned. So we have an idea of what to look out for.😊

  7. Amazing! I enjoyed your vlog immensely. It is a pleasure to watch your work. Thank you so much for sharing. I wish you your continuing success. 👍372

  9. Do you ever wonder if the nature of thai food culture makes it hard to appreciate paying good money for Thai food? I've been Thailand now 4/5 times, and always feel that I feel mugged off back home when people try charge £12+ for a Pad Thai or something, let alone paying it in Thailand. It's one of them ones, can some chef in a kitchen in some plush hotel really do it better than Aunty down a said road for 60thb?
