The predecessor of Kofuku-ji Temple is Yamashina-ji Temple, which was built in the private residence of Kamatari Fujiwara in Yamashina, Kyoto.
After passing through Asuka, it was moved to its current location by Fujiwara no Fuhito when the capital was moved to Heijo in 710.
It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998, and since 1999 excavations have been underway as part of a national historic site preservation project.
The five-storied pagoda (national treasure) of Kofuku-ji Temple, which can be said to be a symbol of the ancient capital of Nara, was built in 730 at the request of Empress Komyo.
The existing tower was rebuilt around 1426.
With a height of 50.1 meters, it is the second tallest wooden pagoda in Japan after the five-storied pagoda of Toji Temple in Kyoto.
