In this Thailand Travel Vlog, we explore Udon Thani – one of the biggest cities in Isan Thailand. We didn’t know much about Udon Thani before we went there, but we were so surprised! Udon Thani was an adorable city with so much to offer!!
We started off by visiting the famous Red Lotus Lake (Talay Bua Daeng) about 40 minutes outside of the center of Udon Thani. We weren’t expecting much as you’re supposed to visit the Red Lotus Lake between December-February and we were visiting at the end of March, however we still really enjoyed it!! It was fun to take a boat on the lake and see all the birds, buffalos, and some red lotuses! We would love to go back though when it is in full bloom as it looks unreal!
After exploring the lake, we headed back to the center of Udon Thani. We checked out the night market (UD Town) and tried to stay cool. The next day we explored the Thai-Chinese Cultural Center as well as the two lakes in Udon Thani. We were blown away by all the people at Nong Prajak Park!!! Not only was it such a cute park (the giant duck statues!!! 😍😍😍), but there were so many fun exercise classes as well as people hanging out, jogging, and biking! After the park we stopped by the CUTEST street full of sushi/Japanese restaurants. We can’t wait to go back to Udon Thani again!!

Udon Thani in the 60s was a tiny town but it was upgraded to what it is today after the US set up an Air Force base there during Vietnam War. The long straight grid roads, roundabouts, town zoning that segregates government office areas from commercial areas, and congregations of many schools and colleges on the same road are the legacy of American town planning of the 70s. Thus, Udon Thani's township shares more similarities with towns in Western USA, than other Thai towns in Isan 🙂
