高野山（こうやさん）は、平安時代の弘仁10年（819年）頃より空海（弘法大師）が修行の場として開いた高野山真言宗の聖地です。和歌山県北東部に位置し、1,000ｍ級の山々に囲まれた標高約800ｍの平坦地に建立された大伽藍となっており、壇上伽藍や奥の院、金剛峯寺、大門など、山域は非常に広大な面積を誇るため、一日で全てを見てまわるのは難しいかもしれません。『紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道』の一部としてユネスコの「世界遺産」にも登録されています。
壇上伽藍（だんじょうがらん）は、高野山の中心地で、弘法大師・空海が曼荼羅の思想に基づいて創建した密教伽藍の総称であり、奥の院と並んで高野山の二大聖地の一つです。高野山のシンボルでもある根本大塔と金堂を中心に時代を経て大伽藍が形成されました。
中心地である根本大塔の東側にある蛇腹道 (じゃばらみち) にも大会堂や三昧堂・東塔などの建築物が並び、特に不動堂 (国宝)は鎌倉時代に建立され、幾度もの火災を免れて残る貴重な建物です。
また、蓮池は平安時代からあった高野山上最大の池で、中央に善女龍王（龍神）が祀られた社があります。龍神は雨乞いや五穀豊穣の神様として信仰されています。
大門（だいもん）は、高野山の入口にそびえる総門で、国の「重要文化財」に指定されています。現在の大門は、1705年に再建されたもので、金剛力士像が安置されています。
大門は「日本の夕陽百選」に選定された夕陽名所としても知られ、大門付近は眺望もよく、天気が良ければ紀淡海峡や淡路島、四国までも眺望できます。標高約900mの聖地から見る夕陽は心に深く刻まれます。
高野山は荘厳な伽藍と夕陽が見られる紅葉名所です
高野山へのアクセスは、複数のルートがありますが、車の場合は和歌山県北部を東西に通る国道24号から国道480号に入って高野山へ登っていくのがポピュラーです。大門の南部にある「お助け地蔵尊前駐車場」や壇上伽藍の近くにある「中門前駐車場」などを利用すると散策に便利です。
Koyasan is a sacred place of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Buddhism, which was established by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) as a place of ascetic practice during the Heian period (819).
Located in the northeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture, the Koyasan Sacred Ground is a large temple built on a flat land 800 meters above sea level, surrounded by 1,000-meter mountains, and boasts an extremely large area of mountainous terrain, including the Danjo Garan, Okuno-in, Kongobu-ji Temple, and the Daimon Gate, so it would be difficult to see everything in one day.
It has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”.
Danjogaran is the general name for an esoteric temple built by Kukai, Kobo Daishi, in the center of Koyasan, based on the idea of mandalas, and is one of the two major sacred places in Koyasan, along with Okunoin. The Daigaran was formed through the ages around the Konpon Daito (Great Pagoda) and Kondo.
Daimon is the main gate of Koyasan and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The present Daimon was rebuilt in 1705 and a statue of Kongo-rikishi is enshrined here.
The Daimon is also known as one of Japan’s “100 Best Sunsets”, and the view near the Daimon is excellent. On a clear day, you can see the Kitan Strait, Awaji Island and even Shikoku Island. The sunset seen from the sanctuary, which is 900 meters above sea level, is deeply engraved in the mind.
Koyasan is a famous place to view the majestic temple and the sunset.
