Thank you for your video. I've recently visited Tokyo, primarily using the trains to travel. I think the best advice for people traveling to Tokyo is, "Read the signs, get the track number, and Yamanote line is your friend".
I'm currently living in Iwate (Ichinoseki City to be exact). I can manage Tokyo a few times a year on my budget. JR East has a few nice train passes for foreign residents, but JR Central and JR West do not – those only have passes for tourist visa status individuals, and similarly same with Hokkaido. While I'm living here, I'd like to see Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Kyushu, and maybe even Sapporo, but the cost by Shinkansen is just to high to justify. I'd like to know if there are cheaper options. I've heard of night busses, there are a few domestic airports in Tohoku (Sendai and Hanamaki), but these options seem complicated to book after looking into it a little bit, having limited Japanese.
I'd be interested in learning:
– More about the long distance bus system. Usually these busses seem to start at the train stations, and strangely the bus companies in Ichinoseki seem scammy and more expensive than the bus companies in Sendai – that is, it appears that it's cheaper to take a train to Sendai (90 minutes away) and get a bus there than it is to get a bus here to the same destination.
– How the domestic airports work. That is, I've learned I can't just walk in to Hanamaki airport, buy a ticket for Nagoya, and be on my way. Limited flights, I don't have a Japanese credit card (and no, my American credit card does not work, and it's very difficult to navigate the websites).
Just some suggestions. Be well.
Hey Mike would a IC card work for the Monorail? Or do I have to buy a regular paper ticket?
