The Hagia Sophia is a historic building in Istanbul, Turkey that has served as a cathedral, mosque, and museum over the course of its 1,500-year history. Originally built as a cathedral in the 6th century AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the Hagia Sophia was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly 1,000 years. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the building was converted into a mosque and served as the primary mosque of Istanbul for nearly 500 years.
In 1935, the Turkish government converted the Hagia Sophia into a museum, and it remained one of Turkey’s most popular tourist attractions for over 80 years. In 2020, the Turkish government reconverted the building into a mosque, a move that was widely criticized by the international community.
The Hagia Sophia is famous for its large dome, which spans 31 meters in diameter and was one of the largest dome structures in the world when it was built. The interior of the building is richly decorated with stunning mosaics and intricate stone carvings, and its exterior is adorned with minarets and intricate stone carvings.
Today, the Hagia Sophia is one of Istanbul’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors each year.
