世界遺産・白神山地にある紅葉名所 ( 暗門の滝 / 十二湖 / 岳岱自然観察教育林 )をご紹介します。
暗門の滝は「世界遺産 白神山地」の緩衝地帯にあり、自然豊かな森の奥地に架かる三つの滝の総称です。
暗門川に沿って遊歩道を1時間ほど歩いてゆくと、滝の轟音が渓谷に響いてきます。

最初に見えてくる「暗門 第三の滝」は落差26ｍの滝で、三つの滝の中では最も高さが低い滝です。
遊歩道は滝の右肩の断崖の上へ続いており、断崖を登る途中からも第三の滝が見下ろせます。
第三の滝を越えてしばらく進むと「第二の滝」が見えてきます。

暗門 第二の滝は、落差が37ｍあり、その先の歩道はやはり滝の右肩の断崖の上へ続いていますが、第二の滝から第一の滝へは、上級者向けの登山ルートとなっていて、しっかりとした装備が必要です。
最奥にある「暗門 第一の滝」は、落差42ｍで、三つの滝の中では最も大きい滝です。

十二湖（じゅうにこ）は、白神山地西麓に位置する湖沼群の総称で、自然豊かなブナの森に大小33の湖沼が点在します。
十二湖は白神山地の中で最も気軽に行ける場所で、海岸から直線距離で約4kmとアクセスも容易で、標高も約200～250ｍと高低差が比較的少なく、主要な池を巡る散策コースを気軽に歩いて回れます。
全ての池を見られる「33湖巡り」コースもあり、地元のガイド同行で歩く事もできます。

十二湖は、江戸時代の大地震で沢がせき止められ、地盤が陥没して形成されたといわれています。また、高台から眺めると池が12個見えたことから、「十二湖」と名付けられたそうです。
十二湖には個性のある多様な池が密集しており、じっくりと時間をかけて散策するのもいいでしょう。
「日本キャニオン」は、白い岩肌がむき出しになった断崖で、米国のグランドキャニオンを連想させる景観であり、十二湖散策におけるハイライトの一つです。

岳岱（だけだい）自然観察教育林は、秋田県藤里町にある約12haのブナ原生林で、世界遺産・白神山地のブナ林を気軽に体験できる森です。ブナと苔むした巨岩との調和が素晴らしく、「森林浴」を楽しみながら世界遺産の森を満喫できます。

森を歩いていると、ブナの巨木にも出会えます。ブナの寿命は通常300年前後といわれていますが、樹齢400年を超える老木は「400年ブナ」と呼ばれます。

岳岱には遊歩道やトイレ、駐車場などが整備され、多目的展示施設では白神山地の自然を紹介しており、トレッキングの際の休憩所としても利用できます。
白神山地は、太古の息吹を感じさせる天然の庭園で、世界遺産にも登録された貴重な自然の宝庫です。

We would like to introduce you to some of the best places to enjoy the autumn leaves in Shirakami-Sanchi, a World Heritage Site (Anmon Waterfall / Lake Jujiko / Dakedai Nature Observation Forest).

Anmon Waterfall is located in the buffer zone of Shirakami Sanchi, a World Heritage Site, and is the collective name for three waterfalls that span the depths of a forest rich in nature.
After about an hour’s walk along the promenade along the Anmon River, the roar of the waterfalls echoes in the valley.

The first waterfall that comes into view, the “Third Waterfall of Ammon,” has a drop of 26 meters and is the lowest of the three waterfalls.
The trail leads to the top of the cliff on the right shoulder of the waterfall, and you can see the third waterfall from the way up the cliff.
A short distance past the third waterfall, you will see the second waterfall.

The second waterfall has a drop of 37 meters and the trail leads to the top of the cliff on the right shoulder of the waterfall, but the route from the second waterfall to the first waterfall is for advanced climbers and requires proper equipment.
The first waterfall, located at the far end of the trail, has a drop of 42 meters and is the largest of the three waterfalls.

Lake Juniko is the general name for a group of lakes and ponds located in the western foothills of the Shirakami Mountains. 33 lakes and ponds of various sizes are scattered in the rich natural beech forest.

Lake Juniko are the most easily accessible in the Shirakami Sanchi region, with a straight line distance of about 4 km from the coast and a relatively small elevation difference of about 200 to 250 meters, making it easy to walk around the main ponds.
There is also a “33 Lakes Tour” course that allows you to see all the lakes, and you can walk with a local guide.

Lake Juniko are said to have been formed when a major earthquake in the Edo period (1603-1868) dammed up a stream and the ground caved in.

The Dakedai Nature Observation and Education Forest is a 12-hectare primeval beech forest in Fujisato Town, Akita Prefecture, where you can easily experience the beech forests of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site. The harmony between the beech trees and the moss-covered giant rocks is wonderful, and you can enjoy the World Heritage forest while “bathing” in the forest.

As you walk through the forest, you will also come across giant beech trees. The life span of a beech tree is said to be around 300 years, but an old tree over 400 years old is called a “400-year-old beech”.

There are walking trails, toilets, parking lots, and a multi-purpose exhibition facility that introduces the nature of Shirakami Sanchi, and can be used as a rest stop for trekkers.

Shirakami Sanchi is a natural garden that reminds us of the breath of prehistoric times, and is a precious treasure trove of nature that has been registered as a World Heritage Site.
