Risshakuji Temple, also known as Yamadera (山寺, “mountain temple”) is a great place to visit in the Tohoku region. It’s really one of my favorite places. Depending on the season, you always get a slightly different scenery. My family is visiting me right now and it’s their first time in Japan. I brainstormed a lot what I should show them and I think Yamadera is a great place to get a “Japanese experience”. We experienced for example mountains, numerous temples, hiking and delicious soba noodles (Yamagata is famous for its Soba noodles!).
