Join Marvin as he explores Shibamata, a charming Tokyo neighborhood located just 20 minutes from Asakusa. Relatively unknown by foreign tourists in Japan, Shibamata’s claim to fame comes from the 1969 film “Otoko wa Tsurai yo” (“It’s Tough Being a Man”) and the town of Showa period buildings has remained well-preserved since.

Visitors can ride the Yagiri no Watashi ferry across the river or enjoy a soothing cup of matcha at the local Yamamoto-tei Japanese garden! Shibamata’s shotengai is another attraction, featuring dagashi shops selling retro Japanese snacks and amusing trinkets. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to try Shibamata’s classic street food treat: kusa mochi, a Japanese rice cake made with Japanese mugwort (kusa) and red bean paste.

  1. That Japanese lady speaking in English and the Aussie host speaking in Japanese. Hysterical 🙂

  2. I visited this neighborhood while I visited Tokyo. I went there specifically for the Kameya Honpo shop. The area is very picturesque. I was there after 3pm on a Tuesday so it was a bit dead. I did not know about the garden or golden poop. There's a really good senbei shop.
