Near Sawara is Katori Jingu, which enshrines Futsunushi, the kami of swords and lightning. It is said to have been founded in 643 BCE during the reign of the legendary first emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu. It was one of the only three jingus listed in the Engishiki from the Heian period along with Ise and Kashima, making it among the three oldest jingus in the country.
