What if I told you there’s an incredible museum on an island in Japan, where art is married to architecture, where light and the seasons affect your experience, and numbers of visitors were strictly limited even before covid? Would you want to go?
We sure did! In fact this was the impetus for our stop in Okayama, why we’d hired a car and got up super early to get the first ferry… SO worth it!
The island of Naoshima is small enough to drive around in about half an hour. Of course, it was longer for us because we had to stop and look at things along the way. This is one of my favourite art experiences anywhere in the world and I hope to return one day. Even the fixed pieces will look different from one day to the next, from one season to another, because of the way the gallery was designed. Even if you don’t consider yourself much of an arts buff, this is worth making the effort. You will think about your surroundings, and your own experiences, rather than simply reading a plaque or being told what to appreciate. And the island is a lot of fun to explore as well.
