Kanamara Matsuri is a centuries old festival which is held is pray for avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases. In the Edo Era (1603-1867) an unfortunate maiden had a demon come to reside in her private area. Her two unsuspecting husbands had their John Thomas consecutively bitten off. A blacksmith fashioned an iron phallus and the demon broke its teeth on it then fled away. Ladies of the Evening would visit the shrine that was created to venerate the iron phallus to pray to avoid diseases related with their work.

Due to Covid, Kanamara Matsuri was blue-balled for 3 years but was finally released in 2023 though the affair was quicker than usual with less fanfare. Hopefully, though, future festivals will be back up and running when things settle down.

In the video I talk with a representative of OhMatsuri which is a website for cataloguing Japanese festivals.
