The water village of wooden houses on stilts located on the northeast coast of Penang Island in Penang state, Malaysia, is mainly inhabited by families of the same surname. The longest wooden bridge extends about 500 meters towards the sea, while some are shorter, and the left and right sides are filled with wooden houses. Originally, there were nine surname bridges, but two of them were demolished to build medium-cost flats as part of the city’s development.
The surname bridges are part of George Town, the capital of Penang state, which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The surname bridges are one of the important cultural landmarks of George Town, fully demonstrating the unique lifestyle of the city’s coastal residents.
