Tamaki Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, is located in Totsukawa Village, Yoshino-gun, Nara Prefecture, on the border between Nara and Wakayama Prefectures. It is said that the shrine was founded in 37 B.C. by the 10th Emperor Sojin, who dedicated the deity Hayatama to protect the Tamaki Castle from fire and to drive out demons. Tamaki Shrine is located at the ninth station just below the summit of the 1076-meter-high Mt. Tamaki, one of the sacred mountains of the Omine mountain range, and has been visited and given spiritual power by many historic ascetics, from Enno Ozunu, the founder of Shugendo, to the legendary charismatic Kukai.

The grounds of Tamaki Shrine are home to a cluster of giant cedar trees, including a 3,000-year-old Jindai cedar, which is designated as a natural monument by Nara Prefecture. The shrine office, kitchen, and temple bell are designated as national important cultural properties.
