When I found out by chance a well-known cruise ship I was on had a murky past I decided find out if any other popular cruise ships that I have been, or plan to go on, also have crazy, mysterious or weird hidden unspoken pasts. These are six of the craziest I came across.

  1. Fascinating video ! Confirms my belief that the human condition includes the possibility for many unwanted realities.

  2. You don't hear nearly enough about these lawsuits that fail. They have the legal side tied up in their favor, right from the start. Thousands of people get screwed by these lines every year. They're amazing at getting fast payment, but good luck EVER getting a fast refund.

  3. I have sailed on the Sapphire Princess. Had no idea of the destructive fire and it certainly was never mentioned. I would sail on her again, she is a pretty ship.

  4. Gary, I reckon the story of Willem Ruys is, by far the most interesting. I worked for James Patrick Stevedoring in the 60's who provisioned the ship when she, as Achille Lauro was berthed in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). Only a young chap at the time I well remember taking mail etc to the ship. Her story is quite remarkable including the mishap with sister ship MS Oranje at 40knts, the collision with Youseff, the take over by PLF terrorists, the mysterious explosion and eventual sinking off Somalia as the MSC StarLauro.

  5. Gary there is nothing I don't LOVE about history then this ,,As
a Firemans with 30 Years Duty .I was lucky to view a Fire Test
on HAL and those Ship Firer Fighter were amagining ..

  6. "SUPPOSED to be a Russian spy ship", thats what they WANT you to think! 😂 Putin has been playing the 40 year long game lol

  7. Bill Burr is right. We need to reduce the world's population and randomly sinking full cruise ships is a brilliant idea.

  8. Wow. that’s fascinating. I would never have thought that ships could have such amazing stories.loved the spy ship one.

  9. Gary,
Back in 2017, I booked a program that included an Amazon River cruise in Peru on a boat called the Amatista. Prior to the trip, I was researching online to learn more about the Amazon riverboat experience and ran across stories about a boat on a similar cruise that while tied up along the shore overnight had been boarded by robbers. The guests were not harmed, but their valuables were stolen. Authorities thought it was an inside job. Made me a little nervous and I wondered how dangerous the cruise might be.
One day during my cruise, I asked the program lead whether that incident had adversely affected the tourist cruises along that part of the Amazon. His response floored me. It turns out that the robbery had occurred on the same riverboat I was traveling on. They had just changed the name! I did not reveal what I had learned to any of my fellow passengers.

  10. "Fairsky" (1958) was originally built as an aircraft carrier as "HMS Attacker". I sailed on this ship twice.
"Fairsea" (1949) was also an ex aircraft carrier ("USS Charger") although this was converted from a newly built cargo ship, the "Rio de Plata". I never got to sail on this ship but did have a walk round on board, back in the days when you could get a boarding pass to see off relatives.
"Costa Allegra" (ex- "Annie Johnson") and "Costa Marina" (ex-"Axel Johnson") were both ex-container ships. I always wanted to try them out but sadly, both are now scrapped.

  11. Back in the 1970's we were on p&o Canberra & those were the days they still did bridge visits & as well as looking out the window I turned around & had a look at the control panels & was surprised to see degaussing controls. When I asked why a cruise liner needed anti-magnetic mine capability they just glossed over the fact but you can see that "Falklands capable" was something that they had already thought about.

  12. Gary amazing topics tks for info. I sailed on Carnival Sunshine! Now I know. I was invited with other news😊😊

  13. After the poop cruise, the Triumph was docked and broke from its moorings during a storm. The bow swung and crushed a guard shack on the dock killing the security guard inside.

  14. I was on the Sky Princess a couple of years after the fire. There was no sign of it.

  15. I thought that this might be an April Fool's Day joke, but I know you would not joke about fire!

  16. We recently sailed on a Holland America ship. The cruise director gave a presentation on the history of HAL. It was quite interesting. There was one surprise though. They are adding a new ship to their fleet and it will be called Prinsendam. The original Prinsendam caught fire and sank. Sailors are very superstitious, so you rarely ever see them reuse a name from a ship that had experienced some disaster. As a former sailor I'm not sure I'd sail on that ship!

  17. Just curious, where on cruise ships are smoking customers allowed to smoke if not out on cabin balconys?

  18. One you missed was the storied history of the Celestyal Crystal. We were scheduled to be on that ship in October, but our cruise has been moved to their newest ship, the Journey.

Crystal started as the Cruiseferry MS Viking Saga in 1980. She was later rebuilt as the Sally Albatross. From 1990 on she was destroyed by fire, scrapped to the waterline then completely rebuilt. She ran aground in ice in 1994 and "sank". Rebuilt in 1995 as a proper cruise ship, she became MSC Leeward then a after several more name changes and refits eventually became Celestyal Crystal, cruising the Aegean.

  19. I think the most horrific story I learned about was Italian cruise ship 'Achille Lauro' in1985.
    I'll leave it at that…. 😢

  20. Have you ever been on a cruise when someone sadly died. I have just been reading about the very sad incident of the Virgin Cruise Valliant Lady happening where a lady fell off one off of the decks.

  21. Really interesting stories Gary! I didn't realize they rename ships in order to escape the bad press. Thank you for the video.

  22. When Iworked at sea on the Southern Ferries 'Eagle' we had the sewage blow back and flooded the crew quarters. Toilet sewage up to my shoulders, the crew were put on bucket duty bailing out the area as the pumps were not doing the job, we were all given an injection from the ship's doctor, but no one was seriously affected. The most unpleasant experience I ever had . Peter mac Donald Penang, Malaysia. I still loved my time working as a merchant seaman out of Southampton.
