Did you know that Tokyo has an island entirely dedicated to cats? Tashirojima, also known as “Cat Island,” is located off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture and is home to more cats than humans. The island’s feline population first grew in the 18th century when cats were brought in to control mice that were damaging the local silk industry. Today, the island’s cats are a major tourist attraction, and visitors can walk around and interact with them. The island even has cat-shaped buildings and a cat shrine, where visitors can leave offerings to the feline gods. Cat lovers should definitely put Tashirojima on their travel bucket list!
