✨ About Always Away:
We are Dominic and Emma. Travelling together as a couple for the last 10 years, we started off backpacking through South East Asia and in 2016 began vanlife as a means to travel with our pug, Percy. Since then, we have slowly been upgrading; from our first self-build micro-camper Renault Kangoo to our Mercedes Sprinter LWB, and now our Fiat Ducato Hymer Swing Motorhome. Vanlife allows us to not only travel with our dog, but experience travelling through places and enjoying the journey, not just the destination. We are advocates for not allowing financial circumstance to be a barrier to travel. Instead we know there is Always Away!

  1. A friend and I hired a campervan in New Zealand and when we arrived it wasn't ready so they told us to find a cabin for the night and they would reimburse us for the cost (up to some maximum cost I can't remember what it was) and then brought the campervan to us. On the second last day of our trip I misjudged on a tight turn getting out of a carpark and put a significant gouge in the side of the camper 🙁 when we returned it and I told the staff member what I had done he said "Well we owe you for that first night in the cabin so we'll call it even then, eh?".

  2. I live in Japan the exact same thing happened to me, gust of ind blew the door hit the car next to us …….. tiny little mark ……… my japanese wife was so upset she called the police……hahahahaha…. two coppers turn up on their mopeds…….. thankfully the owner came back looked at it ………….. got a rag from his boot and wiped it off no problem………..I thanked him with lots of bows and everyone happy…………this is normal behavior here to call the police……………..no one has ever shouted at me though.

  3. Very nice video. 💙❤️❤️🫶🫶🫶 so Sorry to hear. Thank goodness it was a lil smudge. ☺️☺️☺️ Take care and enjoy your adventures.

  4. Now I understand what Sharla ment about the lady. Had you not circled where the "scratch" was, I wouldn't have even seen it. It's barely visible. And the fact that lady blew things way out of proportion getting the police involved and ruining the remainder of your trip. Smh. Still, thank you both and Sharla too for sharing your trip with us in your vlogs.

  5. brings out melon pan
Sharla: "I actually don't like it. It's not horrible. I wouldn't choose to eat it. It's very sweet."
Me: both times I went to Japan and spent a month at a time there, I had it for breakfast every time. With my milk tea. 😂 It's my go to breakfast. I always like to start my day with something sweet. And I was just talking to my family about going to visit my cousin in Japan and how I'm excited just for the melon pan 😂

  6. Sadly, there are a lot of Japanese people (mostly older people) who are not fond of foreigners. I’m half Japanese and I still get hate. I get called “ainoko”, which isn’t exactly a nice way to call a mix person. 😅 But just know majority of Japanese people are quite friendly and understanding! All they really want is peace. So thank goodness for that husband and the police.

  7. yes! you should try a fresh melon pan with soft serve icecream, i think we had it in osaka or was it kyoto in 2019, yum! xjas

  8. 1. You did not budget correctly. That 2000 Pounds/Dollars was not part of your budget. It had to be assumed during budgeting that you would not get it back. You cannot assume that nothing would happen. If you got it back, that's a bonus for your funds.
    2. It was not the fault of the wind. It was your fault for not securing the door before doing anything else.
    3. It is understandable that someone would be angry for hitting their car. We do not how much damage was done. We do not know if the damage actually penetrated through to the body work. You have already understated your role in letting the door get caught by the wind; so, you could be understating the amount of damage.
    4. A third foreigner appearing from the van could have been construed by the victim as "ganging up". This was not to be known by you but you should have had someone with ability to speak fluent Japanese with you to converse with the woman from the beginning.
    5. By the end of the video you were presenting yourselves as entitled travellers who did no wrong, and saying "it's only a minor scratch", showing no compassion or understanding of other people or culture.

  10. Sorry that happened to you all, but I'm enjoying the channel so far. Looking forward to more videos.

  11. I'm sorry to hear the story…Sometimes (Japanese) people think that's all your fault even if it was wind which doesn't make any sense. My friend got sued by a BMW owner for breaking its side mirror by accident. lmao

  12. Oh no! That’s terrible (of the lady!) to waste so much money and time on such the smallest of marks… at least the police were friendly and good. I hope it gets sorted quickly and the deposit doesn’t get affected.

  13. For the record a "Karen Is A Karen" the same the World Over !………Whether American, Japanese, Canadian, or Britain………… They're all quite insane and unpleasant !

  14. I worked at Starbucks the matcha goes well with lots of things like chai and strawberry purée

  15. Newly subscribed to you guys and absolutely love the content! Gutted about the deposit hopefully all gets sorted out soon! We're currently in Japan for 6 weeks on our first visit here and love getting travel tips from you guys!

  16. Just a quick note to anyone traveling in Japan with/in a vehicle – if you hit anything, no matter how small or minor, you MUST call the police. You will actually get in more trouble for not calling them than the incident itself, regardless of the size or extent of the issue.

  17. "I wasn't me, it was the wind" is all you need to hear. The instant you caused trouble to someone else, you should had gone to instant regret and apologizing mode, not of causing damage or not, but because you caused all this inconvenience.

  18. I had this happen to me when I was returning from the supermarket, just about to go on a road trip with my family. As I went to open the door, a gust of wind blew the door out of my hand and it banged against the car next to me. This guy got out of the car, and just started yelling at me, saying I trashed his car. But there was no marks. He couldn't even tell me where the door had hit, because there were no marks. My baby was crying, and he just kept yelling at me, so I drove off. People like that need to chill

  19. Japan just has different standards about respecting other people's stuff. A small door ding in the parking lot is just part of life for us Americans as well, but damaging someone else's property (regardless of how slight the damage is) can be a big deal for Japanese. When foreigners think Japanese are blowing the situation out of proportion, it just reinforces their stereotypes of foreigners and aggravates them more.
