A sea of pink blossoms welcome travelers from around the world and all walks of life during spring season in Japan.
Did you know that cherry blossoms only last 2 weeks? These pink blossoms remind us that life is short. So let’s enjoy the ephemeral beauty it brings while it lasts.
Last week, we went to Ueno Park to watch the cherry blossoms. “Sakura” as the Japanese call it.
Ueno Park is the largest public park in Tokyo, with over 1000 sakura trees,
a zoo and several museums within the park. It’s a popular park for foreigners and locals alike.
We had some yakitori beside the pond and a stunning view of the cherry blossoms.
The blooming period of cherry blossom trees differ from prefecture to prefecture. In Ueno Park, a park located in Tokyo, the cherry blossoms bloom from late March to early April.
This year 2023, the Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival is held on March 17 to April 9.
The blooming season slightly differs yearly, so make sure to check out the website on the link below for detailed information, so you can plan around it on your trip to Japan.

When cherry blossoms start to bloom, the Japanese people have picnics at parks. This activity held yearly is called “hanami” meaning flower-viewing.
Well-known places such as the Ueno Park, Sumida Park, and Meguro River in Nakameguro, hold Cherry Blossom Festivals, where there are performances and street food stalls.
There was a stall selling sakura-flavored sweets, so I had the “sakura-flavored monaka,” a Japanese sweet made of adzuki bean paste, sandwich between crisp wafers.
And the “sakura-flavored manju,” a steamed Japanese confection, with a sweet bean paste filling.
I a capsule toy machine section in Ueno station. I’ll go back for these toys and the museums. So please look forward to that.
