D: Maple, do you know where Peru is?
M: That was out of the blue.
D: Oh, it’s because I’m taking you to a Peruvian restaurant for lunch today.
M: Yes, I remember you saying that last time. But what does Peru have to do with Peruvian?
D: Oh, Peru is the name of the country and Peruvian is the nationality and also the adjective used to describe things that come from Peru.
M: Ah, I see. I want to know where Peru is.
D: Let me show you on a map. It’s located in South America.
M: South America?
D: Yes. We just went to the US, which is located in North America, and Peru is in South America, the farthest continent from Japan.
M: Really?
D: Yes, and actually, did you know that in Hamamatsu there is a lot of cultural influence from South American countries? And we can discover many delicious international restaurants and shops.
M: Oh, actually, I’ve seen some Brazilian grocery stores and restaurants.
D: Right? I know a great Brazilian place we’ll have to visit sometime soon.
M: Cool!

D: Today let’s go to this Peruvian restaurant. It’s a very popular spot.
M: Great. Let’s go!
D: All right.

D: We’re driving south because the restaurant is located in Hamamatsu’s South Ward.
M: I’m looking forward to it.

D: Look, that’s the restaurant on the right. We’re going to park in the back.
M: Okay.

D: You can enter from the back door, but let’s use the really nice front entrance since it’s your first time here.
M: Sure.

D: That restaurant is called “LOBO DE MAR OTANI”.
M: Wow, it looks like we’re in another country.
D: Yeah, isn’t it nice?
M: Absolutely.
D: Let’s go in.

D: Let’s take a look at the menu.
M: Sure. There are a lot of dishes I’ve never seen before.
D: Don’t they look good?
M: Uh huh. They all look great.

D: Today, let me order my favorites. I’m sure you’ll love them.
M: Super!

D: Let’s have Peruvian drinks first. I ordered Inka Kola and Chicha Morada.
M: I’m not familiar with either of them.

D: Inka Kola is a popular soft drink originally from Peru. It has a distinct yellow color and a sweet, fruity flavor, and is often described as having a taste similar to bubblegum. Chicha morada is a traditional beverage made from purple corn, fruit, and spices.
M: Very interesting.

D: Oh, the first dish has arrived.
It is called Causa Rellena.
It’s mashed potatoes seasoned with Aji Amarillo and lemon.
M: Aji Amarillo? What is that?
D: It is a type of chili pepper commonly used in Peruvian cuisine. It has a bright yellow color, a fruity flavor, and a medium level of spiciness.
M: Nice.

D: The Causa Rellena on the left is topped with chicken and huancaina sauce which is a creamy and spicy sauce made from a base of fresh cheese, aji amarillo, evaporated milk, and saltine crackers. The one in the middle is topped with shrimp and a ketchup and mayonnaise sauce. And the one on the right is topped with octopus and an olive sauce.
M: What a beautiful and interesting dish!
D: It melts in your mouth.

D: This is Cebiche.
M: What’s Cebiche?
D: It typically consists of raw fish or seafood that is marinated in citrus juices, such as lime or lemon juice, along with various spices and seasonings, including onion, cilantro, chili peppers, salt, and pepper.
M: That sounds really healthy.
D: Yes, it is. And it’s extremely good.

D: The next one is Lomo Saltado.
M: Looks really good.
D: It is a stir-fried dish made with beef that is marinated in soy sauce and vinegar, then quickly cooked with onions, tomatoes, and spices, and served with fries and rice.

D: The last one is called Aguadito Mixto.
It’s made with seafood such as shrimp and oysters, as well as rice, cilantro, and vegetables such as peas and carrots. Fish broth is used.
M: Why is it green?
D: It’s green because it is made with a generous amount of fresh cilantro, which gives the soup its vibrant green color.
M: I see. It’s interesting.

D: What’s your impression of Peruvian cuisine?
M: It’s absolutely astounding!
Since I’d never heard of Peruvian food before, it was a total mystery for me before I came here, but I’m already a huge fan!
D: Great to hear that.
Maple, do you have room for dessert?
M: I always do!
D: Great. Then, why don’t we try a traditional Peruvian dessert that is similar to crème caramel or flan.
M: Fabulous.
