In these days, I received some questions in comment. Thank you for your comment. And today, I pick up one question and answer the question about the tips for the Japanese travel. Today’s topic is here.
“How do you insert the JR pass inside the ticket machine? I’m worried about the machine eating my JR pass since it’s expensive! Please do a video showing how.”
This question is very important. Because the rules of JR Pass was changed in April 2021. Former, the shape of JR Pass is looks like this. When you ride the train, every time you have to visit the gate with attendant. But now, that shape was changed like this. This chicket is very similar to the Sinkansen ticket. And now, you can use the automatic gate. This ticket is made of paper, one side is magnetic, kind of magnetic tickets.
Look at here. You can look the QR code so you wonder when you use the QR code. When you reserve the seats for the train like a shinkansen or so, you use this QR code. When you reserve a seat, you can pick up two ways. One is using with website and two is using the automatic ticket vending machine. In each way, you receive the tickets by auto vending machine. You don’t need extra charge for seat reservation. Look at here. Here is Japan Rail Pass menu. And push it. Upper menu is for the receive reserved seat tickets you order on the web. When you use this menu you can use QR code on the JR Pass. And also you can select directly on the auto vending machine.
I’m at Shinagawa station for showing how to insert your JR Pass into automatic machine gate. The best way to show you how to use the JR Pass is I will get the JR Pass and insert it directly. But I am Japanese, I cannot get the JR Pass. So insteadly, I get a Shinkansen ticket. Because JR Pass and Shinkansen tickets are very looks like similar, and you have to do is the same way. The way to how to use is very simple. If you reserved your a seat or not, only you have to do is insert your JR Pass directly into the machine gate. The seat reservation ticket is only note for you. You don’t need to put a seat ticket into the automatic ticket gate. Let’s check out how to insert this ticket and how to pick up. Let’s go.
Okay, let’s check out once more.
There are two types of automatic ticket gate, right side is only for IC tickets, left side is for IC tickets and paper tickets. JR Pass is paper ticket, you should use left side ticket gate. JR Pass is magnetic ticket, take care of the insert direction. Printed side is upside. Here is insert sleeve. You should insert only JR Pass as I said. Go through the gate, and don’t forget to pick up your JR Pass from automatic gate. The number of the tickets you should pick up is shown on the display. After getting off from the train, don’t forget to pick up your JR Pass from automatic gate. Because your JR pass can use repeatedly.
The rules of the JR Pass is very difficult, this time I asked to JR East company’s member, and I can understand completely. But only you check the website maybe it’s difficult to understand completely. This time I talked about how to use JR Pass, but if there are some points about you cannot understand completely, please ask the quention in the comment. I will answer about it.

Does JR Pass can be used for regular train in Tokyo/Osaka? Like if we want to go from Ueno to Shinjuku? Or only for Shinkansen? I plan to go to Japan this November, and i heard that JR Pass also can be used as daily ticket for city train, is that correct?
I am actually kinda surprised no ones ever mentioned the reservations via website lol
Thankyou for answering my question! Arigato! 😊
I believe you have to insert the seat reservation ticket altogether with the JR Rail Pass ticket when you pass through the ticket gate. The machine will know and that's why there is a number of ticket count at the end of the walk way.
What the new JR Ticket turned out really plain. Useful for the gates but that the only thing about it. Happy I got the old JR Pass as a memory of my travel back 10 years ago 🙂
we can use the JR pass in the JR buses line too, right? I can't find any information about how to use this new ticket on the bus ):
thank you jake-san for this helpful videos for us travelers.. hoping you make other helpful tutorials soon
Thanks for this update on the JR pass
This is fantastic, thank you
Hello, i have a question.
With the JR Pass may i use the Yamanote line or I need another kind of card? Thank You and great video
Arigato Gozaimasu!
We just got back a few days ago from Japan – it was amazing. The rail system was incredibly easy to use. The gates don't eat your pass – you put it in the slot and it pops back out on the other side – just grab it as you walk through. If it does get stuck, flag down the attendant (there always is one) and they'll open the gate up and find it for you. 🙂
Jake: Can you please do a video about Suica and Passimo cards? I don't know if people planning a trip would really understand how versatile a Suica card is! We used ours all over the place – buses, subway, convenience stores, vending machines! Also, how to load it with more yen – that took us a little bit of work to figure out, because we didn't understand how to find the correct machine!
i will be traveling during the golden week and to very far places in Japan, can you advise if my chance of getting a reserved seat is higher if i purchase a green car ticket as compared to the normal class ticket?
Or any other advice you would suggest?
My travel plans:
29 April – Tokyo to Morioka (Iwate)
30 April – Morioka to Kumamoto
3 May – Kumamoto to Tokyo
and i would say you have superb english speaking skills! thanks for making me understand the new jr ticket!
Thank you so much, i am going there end of March and this is very useful! And i find Japan Rail system really confusing. Even for a local like you is hard to understand, imagine us foreigners! Anyway, i have done my research and hopefully i got it right about the various tickets for trains/buses need for various cities/areas. I will be only buying a Shinkansen one way from north to south, hence i won't be buying a JR Rail Pass as it can't be use everywhere (example, it only can be use halfway to Kawaguchiko area near Mt Fuji on the Fuji Excursion Line, very confusing!) and not worth the money unless you are travelling with the shinkansen up and down at least 2 times. Instead i plan to use a combination of Tokyo Subway pass, Suico cards and other pass in Kyoto and Osaka.
Hey, thanks for the video. It's very helpful. I still got a little question. If I got the Jr pass, do I only need the seat reservation for the shinkansen? I don't need an additional ticket, right? Thank you for the help! ☺️
Do i need to buy JR pass if I travel to Japan?
Hi, I gonna travel to Japan for 3 months from the 28 February till 28 mai, on internet you can order the JR PASS but is just a paper that you give to the office in Japan and change it for the JR PASS but it sims that they send it to Europe at your home but I’m traveling in Indonesia now, do you know if they also send it by email ? Or is it just by post ? Other options would be to buy it directly in Japan but I have ear that will be more expensive than buy it in internet
With the new rules, can you still go to a counter and do all the transactions (tickets exchange and reserve seats) without resort only to a machine?
Hi Jake are you in Tokyo ? Are you available for Tokyo or Japan tour guide 24 March onwards 2023 ?? Cheers Ian
新幹線で荷物を運ぶルールも変わったと聞きました。それは本当ですか?
I just got back used JR pass 3 weeks I dont like how its like a regular ticket. I have used pass many times before. The pass got eaten few times and last 4 days I had to go to where there was a station attendant it got annoying explaining that bar code no good. I only put the pass in not my ticket because attendant told me didnt need to put both in when I did do both more times it ate one of them. It was sometimes hard to find attendant at all stations so impossible if not working to be able to go in to station. I used it so many times I wore it out I went all over Japan from Hokkaido to Fukuoka it was well used.
Thank you for your information. If we're wrong, it's not JR train, will our Jr pass card go in and not come out again? Thank you
Thank you very much for the clear explanation! Last time I went to Japan it still was the old version.
Hello Jack. I will traveling to Hokkaido from Tokyo city in 4 days, 3 nights. If you know there is a hot tour for this trip, could you please let me know. Tour started from Hokkaido, Our Group are 10 person. Thank you in advance
I wanted to ask if I could use the money on my suica card to purchase my JR pass? Thank you so much for the answer!
Can I check? JR Pass says Children under 6 don't need a JR Pass and can travel free. But does that mean only the adults can reserve seats?
So children sit on the lap? Or if the seat is empty, the child can sit?
Also,
Thank you for the video! It's a good thing I stumbled on it before I visit.
Thanks I arrive into Osaka Kansai airport tomorrow. I haven't had to time to order a JR Rail pass. Can i get one at the airport? I will be in Japan for 14 days and it would really help. thanks.
THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION, IM PLANNING MY FIRST TRIP TO JAPAN FOR MY 64th BIRTHDAY NEXT YEAR , PLANNING TO GO TO STAY IN TOKYO AND KUMAMOTO CITY , L🙏👊🥋⛩
Hi, Jake. I was looking through the shinkansen time table provided by Google Maps from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo and vice versa, but it was only available in Nozomi train 🙁 I need to know when the last train will depart from Shin-Osaka to fix my accommodation dates in Japan but searching everywhere is no help. Could you please tell me?
Good details on using JR pass at the gate
Thanks for the information! Been wanting to visit Japan again. But chicken out because of the vaccine restrictions and the requirements of the PCR test. I am disappointed with the Japan government for still putting the restrictions in place. Most of the world already opened up. United States will soon cancel the covid restrictions. About time for Japan to cancel the restrictions!
Thank you for a very helpfull video
Kinda bummed out that it's now looks like a regular ticket. It's hard to keep it safe and secure, unlike the old JR Pass where you show it to the attendant to pass the gates. But thank you for the explanations!
Thanks for making this video! This year will be my first time visiting Japan. I do have a few questions to ask: Can you make train reservations days in advance or do you have to do them on the same day? How long does it take to reserve a train seat using the machine? Are the ticket machines available 24 hours a day?
Your video was easy to understand adding an important difference between the proper gate for the JR Pass and IC pass. For first time travelers like myself I can think of two potential questions: For reserved seat (Green Car Pass) when do I want to make a reservation for the Shinkansen; Do I need to make a reservation in advance or can I just go to the station and use the machine and choose a train and a seat.
Coming from the U.S. I understand buying the JR Pass in advance on line. Arriving a Haneda Airport I need to find the JR Pass office and surrender my claim check to receive my JR Pass. It is necessary to have a Passport for each ticket I purchase. The tickets can be activated at Haneda Airport if I wish to use it to ride the train into Tokyo. Once the pass is activated it is good for the number of days purchased 7, 14, or 21 days which is contiguous.
If you could correct any mistakes I make and add information on the questions It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the video – I am arriving to Tokyo on Saturday – Can I not but the JRPass there?? C
Hi Jake-San, if I purchase JR Pass from third party platform (Klook), am I able to do seat reservation as well ?
I like your video, can you please make a step-by-step video on how to purchase a Japan Metro Train ticket all the way until you decide what platform to take, specially when there are several train lanes at the same train station? Thank you
Thank you Jake I arrive next month – are you a tour guide at all?
is there a JR pass from Narita airport to Shinagawa station? Thank you.
Thank you!! Very informational. Good work!
Hi Jake! Thanks for making this video, it's really benefiting and helpful! I have a question about JR pass – is seat reservation required for trains other than shinkansen?
SOS!If someone knows please help! I have reasons to believe that i have been given fake coupons for the jrpass. How to check if they are fake before going to japan?
Can I buy a jr pass in Japan for 14 days? How much is it in total for 14 days. I am having a hard time finding reliable information. I will already arrive in Japan in Fukuoka on March 27, 2023. So in a few days. Is it true that I can buy one in Hakata? Thank you very much for your Help!
