Manila 🇵🇭 is a city of contrasts. In some places, like the famous BGC neighborhood, you can find glistening skyscrapers and “first world” amenities that could rival anywhere in the world. And yet right next to it lies something very different. Over the years, informal tenements and slums sprung up all over the city, which is exactly what you’ll find surrounding BGC. A literal wall separates the richest of the Philippines from those of more humble means.

If you visit, Filipinos will tell you to never go there, to never cross the boundaries that divide BGC and the surrounding slums. But I was curious. I could literally see these places from my window.

And more importantly, I had to get to the damn Western Union.

  1. fun fact: Philippines hood/slum is more safer than in united states hood/slum

  2. Love your vlogs, getting better and better each episode! My favorite part is how you give a lot of cool info about the place and the history of it!

  3. Very true…..for the last 36 years, philippine economy became non performing and even worst in southeast asia due to political uncertainty, military adventurism and rampant corruption in government offices. Hopefully with new reform of business laws and governance being implemented by the prevoius president PRRD and now PBBM, the government could sustain robust development and increase of foreign investment, the Philippine would able to achieve its target of middle income by 2026. For your information, the new administration of PBBM has allocated billion of dollars from Pag-ibig Fund and Land Bank of the Philippine to build descent homes for 6 million families until 2028 for informal settler living in slum area around the country.

  4. I thought I would share if you don't know the truth behind Sogo and other establishments. The family home of most Filipinos will have upwards of 10 people living in two rooms. There is no privacy. My wife's family have, to date, 14 people, so when a couple want privacy, these are the places they go to continue, sadly, populating this country and perpetuate the dire poverty.

  5. Loving your videos thanks 🙏 watching you from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 take care my friend 🙏🙏🙏🙏

  6. You work for 40yrs to have $1m in your retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $10k in a meme coin for just few months and now they are multimillionaires, all thanks to Mrs Sonia , God bless you ma 👏

  7. In the Phild contrast is allowed to coexist. We’re not pretensious! Rich or poor they are people. No need to hide.

  8. I think most popular cities in the world have their own mixture of urban & slums. That's hard to avoid.

Cities usually grow out of residential neighborhoods. So business men would have to purchase the land parcels where people are living so they could put buildings and skyscrapers there.

The problem with places like Metro Manila, the land was sliced into very small real estate to many families long time ago.

So now, if you want to put up a skyscraper, buying several land titles from many different families could become extremely expensive. That's why some families get stuck around the urban landscape. They own the land titles since World War 2. You will need to spend a fortune buying them all out of their properties.

  9. 8:54 Privately, the U.S., China, and Russia are again allies … this time against the Deep State. Once our current illegitimate administration is gone, it will become apparent to all.

  10. What’s the big deal here sabbatical? If you want to see real hoods, you gotta go to Chicago, Memphis, TN, Baltimore, MD, or Washington, DC to name a few in the US. The hood behind BGC looks safe and secure in comparison to the US slums.

  11. The Philippines suffers from INCOMPETENT people in the government and does not have a real Public Housing Program. In addition, the government does not know how to enforce housing regulations. Therefore, outside private developments, there is chaos and grime which suggests to some people as being not safe.

Also, The Philippines is a DEVELOPING country. While some parts are definitely developed, other areas (yes, even just across the wall) still need to be developed.

  12. The bedspace that posted ladies only it doesn't mean there's a discrimination. It means all of the tenants or renter's there are females so they will only accept females to be safe. There are also bedspace who accepts males only. They just separate the females and males for security purposes. Most of the females will not stay or rent a space with a male in a room except if they are group of friends. Hope you understand that. The slums behind in BGC that you are talking about it's not that poor. They own that building and they are lucky to have a property in metro manila because the price of the property are very high in Manila especially in Makati and BGC. Most of the property owner there renovate their property into 3 story building or made a lot of rooms for the people who cannot afford to rent a condo will stay in that neighborhood. So, most of the people live in that area are renter's or tenants who work in Makati and BGC.

  13. That's hard to reconcile. How can a church be in the center of materialism and love for worldly stuff? 😆 Although I've seen worse, in Madrid there is a live sex peep show place along Calle Atocha which is beside a chapel. 😄 I visited that place back in the 2000s.

  14. I once met nice Filipina working at Greenhills making up to 250P a day in a good day. She told me she rented a bed space in the slum at Greenhills for 1,000P a month. This was back in 2017.

Then another girl told me that they really want to get a job at Jollibee since they pay very well. Who would ever believe such a thing in the USA…

  15. Hear O Philippines Rejoice Michael the great prince of Israel has been born in the flesh and walking among us the sons of Israel. The wonderful BIRTH of revelation 12 is fulfilled in Michael. If not Michael Who?

Michael soon shall stand up and remove all poverty from before your face.

The Catholic Church teaching is wrong the manchild name is Michael.

  16. Sucks because I wanted Philippines to be a secret place but thanks to content creators getting greedy and clout hyper hungry for clicks.

  17. Should've got the fried chicken at jollibee. It's what they're known for. I'm not a fan of the "Pinoy/Filipino" Spaghetti. As a filipino that's blasphemy but I prefer non-sweet spaghetti

  18. at 6:37 I didn't get if he said an apartment here for 500 (USD) month, or 5000 (PH Peso) per month?
