I remember this! Back home, when I was only 8 years old I swam with a group of friends… frigging the tide took me in I drowned. But I was saved by another man. Frigging dragged me from the tank area all the way to shores…
Beautiful photography and a tribute to the brave Americans who stormed the beaches so many years ago. Thanks
I visited Saipan twice in 1976/77. On my first visit I spent almost the entire afternoon snorkeling around and climbing over the 1st tank. I also saw the remains of blown up landing craft.
The next day I met an American woman who lived on Saipan, that knew the commander of the 1st tank. He and the rest of his crew had to make their way wading ashore under heavy enemy fire after the engine of the tank stalled in the surf.
She said the man she knew survived the war, and was a retired car salesman in St.Louis.

It’s a Germany town from 1945
