Yatai food stalls are small food and drink establishments that are very popular in Japan and in the neighboring countries like Korea and China. They have been popular in Japan since the Edo period (you can see them in the old Japanese movies) and continue to be.
It is specially the overworked salary men in Japan end up at these places in the evening and enjoy a drink and food with their colleagues. They are also popular with out of town visitors and in some cases foreign visitors.
Usually there are temporary food stalls that are created during festivals (Matsuri) and other celebrations in Japan but in some places these Yatai are a permanent fixture in the side of the roads and parks. Fukuoka City is one of these places where these Yatai are many and are extremely popular. Canal City area and on the side of these River there are many of these food stalls.
Hope you get a chance to visit one of these stalls and enjoy the food!!!
