  1. Sintra's another one of those places that is on the list. A list I really must do something about fulfilling.

  2. I can't believe you missed the oportunity to leave at the amazing Rossio Station!! One of the most beautiful stations in our country that sits right in the middle of the historic center of lisbon and has an approach tunnel that stretches over 2.5kms underneath the city dating back to the 19th century!

  3. Sintra is indeed a beautiful place (with a vintage tram which I have yet to use) and I agree wholeheartedly is worth a visit. Nice editing of the pressing of the bell with the music. Always good to watch your reviews.

  4. When I told my wife you were doing a video of Sintra, she said that the thing she remembers most about our trip to Sintra was the bus journey to & from the station and the castle. Should've gone to Rossio – much more historic station and that tunnel…

  5. Thanks for the preview. In late April 2023 Ill be taking the train from Rossio to Sintra and return. Then the Alpha Pendular to Porto, an IR in vintage coaches along the Douro Valley and finally the Porto-Vigo(Spain)train to make a connection with RENFE to Santiago de Compostela. From there its back to Madrid on a high speed gauge changing Alvia. Very excited for this trip.

  6. Would have been more informative, to someone unfamiliar with Portugal, to have mentioned & shown on the Google Earth map, the relationship of the commuter line to the city's airport, & to intercity rail lines: Lisbon – Madrid (assuming there is one?), for example.

  7. We spent 4 days in Lisbon last October and used that line from Sete-Rios (closer to our hotel) to/from Sintra and the other commuter line along the Tagus from Cais do Sodré to the area near the monuments and monastery. We then took the AP to/from Porto, which was an amazing value–two second class tickets totalled only €63 for the round trip when purchased a few weeks in advance. With the strong dollar, we spent less flying from Chicago on TAP to Lisbon, 9 nights in hotels, the round trip on the AP plus transit passes in both Lisbon and Porto than we would have spent to fly to Denver and rent a car to drive around the smaller mountain towns over just 7 days.

  8. Nice video The station where you exited the train looks a bit like the main railway station of Liège in Belgium "Liège-Guillemins"

  9. Yeah, the hand of the architect Calatrava is unmistakable in the Gare do Oriente. I couldn't remember his name immediately, but it looks like Liège-Guillemins.

Lisbon reminds me of Malta. Nor so much because of the weather, but because of the sheer amount of building cranes. That's a bit of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it shows that it's apparently attractive to invest in real estate and the wider economy. On the other hand, it's really easy to build the place full of soulless, non-descript, steel-and-glass skyscrapers.

Portugal is on my bucket list. But it's a bit tricky to get there from where I live.

  10. Thanks a lot. It's a pleasure every week assists at you excellent work. Welcome to Portugal. In this country we have lot sun every day. Nice sky to make good movies. Lets go to the train!

  11. I've travelled between Porto / Coimbra and Lisbon a few times, mostly using the Pendular trains – the problem is they use the same track as the regular trains, even if they travel more quickly the time table do not give much option, just catch the next train and it will be first to arrive. Also travelled on th line towards Cascais via Estoril, I visited the World Expo in 1998 but stayed in a hotel away from the city and commuted in. I recall the doors being open, hot day, no aircon. Seemed normal to the locals, here H&S would blow a fuse.

  12. Nice vídeo.
As for the trip & EMUs, it's true that their top speed is 120 Km/h, but on that trip they don't go all that fast. On that route, there's only a section, after leaving Portela, all the way to Algueirão, in wich the maximum permited is 100 Km/h, with the standard speed being 90 Km/h (it doesn't look but the line is hilly).
As for the units, these belong to a second series with 14 units that enteed service in 1998. The 1st series (the 2300s), entered revenue service in 1993 and comprises 42 EMUs

  13. Agree, Sintra is a great place to stay at. Too many visitors just do a day trip from Lisbon to see the Pena Palace. Best to stay overnight, not rush to see the sights and enjoy a place that is great for relaxing.

  14. Great trip. I'm curious, Sintra is still part of Lisbon or not? The sintra Station feels like Tram station, no concrete barrier surrounding and merging with surrounding. Next how about visiting Azores and Madeira from mainland by Ferry.

  16. Hello, I ' made Sintra-Liboa like you,Coimbra-Porto with the pendolino train ( Portuguese TGV), where I saw the beautiful station of Sao-Bento. In 2001, I took the train from Lisboa to Faro and the old station was on the other side of the Tage, I was going to see this station in 2019 and the station in now abandonned" ( I have fotos), In Portugal I also visited the National museum of railway in the town of Entrecamento, one hour with the train from Lisboa Santa Appolonia…. All good trips….

  17. Liked and subscribed. Imagine if your going to the longest train journey from Singapore to London UK or Lagos Portugal and you have to make many parts

  18. Sintra station isn t unmanned, you just used the wrong entrance.
Regarding the amenities, those trains are a quasi urban railway, with only a slack time of 1 and a half minute between Sintra and Lisbon and 30 second stops. So you do not have any dwell time. Always rolling. Had you came at that time in the opposite direction you wouldn t be that happy.
The windows open when the AC is not working properly, which isn t uncommon .
The speed is mostly 90 km/h all the way as the Sintra line is a Mountaineous line with lots of sharp curves. In the core of the belt line in Lisbon the speed is 70 due to the complexity of the layout
