Heavy rains have caused flooding along the coast of the Sea of Japan in the regions of Tohoku and Hokuriku. More than 540,000 people have already received evacuation orders, according to the Japanese TV channel NHK.
The overflow of the banks of the Mogami River in Nagai, Yamagata Prefecture, led to a natural disaster. Local TV channels and social networks show flooded houses along the rivers, partially submerged cars and mud-filled roads. Parts of Yamagata and Niigata prefectures have collapsed bridges and have experienced landslides.
About 10,000 households, most in Niigata Prefecture and neighboring areas, have been left without electricity and running water, according to local authorities. At least 2 people are missing.
Heavy rain also forced the temporary suspension of Shinkansen bullet train service between Fukushima and Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture.
