Satvik (सात्विक) food refers to a category of food in the Indian tradition that is considered pure, clean, and beneficial for the body and mind. Satvik food is believed to promote health, mental clarity, and spiritual well-being.

In general, Satvik food is vegetarian, excluding meat, fish, eggs, onions, garlic, and other foods considered to be Rajasic or Tamasic (stimulating or dulling) in nature.

The diet emphasises fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and dairy products. It also places great importance on the method of preparation and cooking, focusing on using gentle cooking techniques and natural ingredients to preserve the nutritional value of the food.

The idea behind Satvik food is to eat food that is simple, light, and easy to digest and that does not overstimulate or overload the body or mind.

This diet is commonly followed by those practising yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices, as it is believed to enhance the benefits of these practices by promoting a calm and balanced state of mind.

What is tamasic food?

Tamasic food is a category of food in the Indian tradition that is considered heavy, dull, and detrimental to the body and mind. Tamasic foods are believed to promote lethargy, sluggishness, and negative emotions.

In general, Tamasic foods are excessively oily, spicy, salty, or fried. Examples of Tamasic foods include meat, fish, eggs, onion, garlic, fermented foods, stale or overripe food, and processed or packaged foods.

These foods are believed to harm physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual well-being.

The idea behind Tamasic food is that it is not conducive to a healthy and balanced life, as it can weigh down the body and mind and lead to disease and negative emotions. In contrast, Satvik food, which is considered pure and beneficial, is believed to promote health, mental clarity, and spiritual well-being. The middle category of food is called Rajasic food, which is stimulating in nature and includes foods like coffee, tea, and spicy foods.

  1. where is this in navi mumbai? i lived in kharghar which is by the panvel line from CST for most of my life until last year when i moved to mumbai. seeing the chill area really reminds me of the lazy afternoons we used to have there before the boom and bustle of a more developed town came. the 5 floor flats, small shops by the roads, mild sunlight of the afternoon, quiet neighbourhood and the somewhat humid but cool air really made it such a cool place to live.
the locals there are quite tame, living peacefully with each other and all.
    i miss living there.

  4. Real Indian food is in this kind of streets, small town and villages. Big restaurants just scam people in the name of Indian food. Small businesses always make good food because they can only rely on the taste of their food and not fancy interior.

  5. Karl my friend, we're so happy to have you as our brother-in-law to our beautiful sister.

    जोड़ी बनी रहे🎉🎉

  6. Satva is food for the body and soul, Rajas is food for the kings – oily, sweet and tasty, Tamas is food for the warriors – so oicy, hot and tasty too 😊 Manu didn't explain these correctly I believe.

  9. Exactly same thought came 2 my mind. What parents tells us to eat and we don't eat

  10. This type of food is very much mistaken. Most animals sleep after eating so why should humans be any different???

  11. Satvic food = Scam
I mean, they are using copious amounts of you don't know which oil and just selling it due to the fake nationalist sentiment. And who said Chili Paneer would someday be a "Satvic" food. Fucking joke!

  12. Dhaaba written on thumbnail is wrong. It's ढाबा not ढ़ाबा । Please correct it.

  13. Satvik food also means No garlic, no onion 😅 Along with less spices, no chillies, less oil, no meat or egg etc.
    In short, HEALTHY FOOD.
