About Kawai-jinja or Cute Shrine河合神社

Kawai-Jinja Shrine (The word Kawaii かわいい or 可愛い known as Cute or adorable or lovely) (河合神社) is located very close to “Demachiyanagi station” as well as the intersection of the Kamo (鴨川) and Takano (高野川) Rivers.
In Kyoto, women of all ages visit the Kawaii-Jinja Shrine to pray for God’s blessings on their beauty, cuteness, and charm.
Small wooden plaques shaped like vanity mirrors were sold at the entrance, and worshippers painted and adorned them with coloured pencils and cosmetics as an expression of their hopes for their ideal appearance.
Most of the girls create the cutest photos with these wooden mirrors and post them on popular social media such as Instagram.
Worshippers or visitors may also purchase a glass of “beauty drink”, said to be beneficial for the complexion, in the gift store inside, and sip it while admiring ancient artifacts.
