Kankoji Temple is a historic Rinzai school Zen temple that has existed in Minamiuonuma for over 5 centuries. Bearing the image of a “soothing zen temple”, the grounds’ green moss, flowing water, and serene ambiance beyond the main gate help to put any visitor’s spirit at ease. These places also offer opportunities to enjoy the abundant nature of snow country during Japan’s rainy season through practicing Zazen in a large wooden temple. And this particular temple also has an a balcony overlooking an impressive rock garden and seasonal hydrangea flowers.
