This climb is still the most memorable adventure in my life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I spent 5 weeks in Japan during the summer of 2014. As an adventurer, I decided to set aside a weekend to climb Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is the highest point in the country at 12,388 feet. While there are certainly higher points around the world (and the US), Fuji is pretty unique. It is a sacred place. Over 300,000 people climb the mountain every year, often as a religious and cultural pilgrimage. It’s also an active volcano! It certainly isn’t a high-activity volcano, though. It last erupted in 1707, creating neighboring Mount Hoei – refereed to as a flank volcano. In terms of major geological events, this is considered very recent.

When climbers are properly aclimated to the altidude, the climb can be completed in a day. However, those that can’t acclimate or aren’t physically ready for the climb should consider staying in a ‘mountain hut’. My stay at station 9.5 cost me about $85 USD and included dinner, a packed breakfast, and the use of a sleeping bag and mat in a communal sleeping area.
