The Shinkansen is Japan’s high-speed rail system and the world’s first high-speed rail system. Prior to the division and privatization of the railroad, it was operated by Japan National Railways, and is currently operated by five JR Group companies. In preparation for the 1964 Summer Olympics, the Tokaido Shinkansen opened for the first time on October 1, 1964. The opening of the Shinkansen, the only Japanese high-speed railway in the world, became an opportunity to publicize Japan’s potential to the world 20 years after World War II, and even today, the Japanese high-speed railway Shinkansen is one of Japan’s important symbols. It celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, and is famous for its outstanding safety, with no accident casualties caused by internal factors in the history of the Shinkansen for over 50 years.
