    very pretty island. the water is beautiful. I looked up the history of Miyako-jima. During the invasion of Okinawa, in 1945 during World War 2, there was a small airfield located on Miyako-jima, in which multiple Japanese pilots flew Kamikaze attacks on the American fleet. One managed to hit the US destroyer Callahan, killing 47 American sailors. Apparently there is still a monument honoring the Kamikaze pilots there in Miyakojima City. Did you come across that monument when you visited there?
