This time I went to Mombetsu, Hokkaido for one night and two days. As usual, I traveled alone.
Every winter, Mombetsu City in Hokkaido hosts a drift ice cruise. On this cruise, you can see drift ice up close from the sea.
Mombetsu City is located in the central part of Hokkaido, between the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, and is characterized by its abundance of fresh seafood. In particular, seafood such as hokki-gai and button lobsters are exquisite and can be tasted at local restaurants.
During the winter season, drift ice from the Sea of Okhotsk comes in from the Sea of Okhotsk. Cruises are offered to view this drift ice up close. On a drift ice cruise, visitors board a special cruiser and proceed out to sea. From the ship, you can enjoy beautiful views of the drift ice. You can also board an ice floe and explore ice caves. The cruise period is from mid-January to early March, and the schedule is subject to change depending on weather and drift ice conditions.
