Hokkaido in the winter has so much to offer for photographers, frozen waterfalls, ice floes, hore frost, rime, snowy landscapes, and of course, the wildlife. This memorable trip won’t easily be forgetten. I travelled to Tsurui Mura, a small village in the north easter area of Hokkaido to photograph the iconic red-crowned crane. I captured a 5 out of 5 image for my portfolio, experienced a natural phenomenon that scared the bejeebers out of me, witnessed the most beautiful sunrise, river scene I’ve ever seen, and found inspiration from a new friend. Join me on this spectacular adventure.

  1. Absolutely stunning Shaun. I honestly can’t choose a favorite photo so I’d like to order a copy of each 😉

  2. Gear matters not Sean and most people don’t care what you have. Your prize shot of the two dancing cranes in the snow gave me goosebumps. That’s when gear doesn’t matter…i feel that the reaction of the viewer is how you measure yourself as a photographer. I started my journey as a wildlife photographer and those cranes have been on my to see list for over 30 years. Great story telling as always and so glad to hear your ok after your near miss with Mother Nature.

  3. Ho Hum… A bird shooting video. Shaun, as you know I am focused almost exclusively on Landscape/woodland/water photography, but I like your photos, so I decided to go ahead and give this one a quick look. Boy, am I glad I did.

You started out with a usual wake up, bit of crane history, the drive, crowded location beginning, and then….you turned around….and from that moment on, you never looked back again. Your first B roll was very interesting, but then you patiently waited and gave us some incredible stills… "Two Heads Held High", "Three in a Row" were just the beginning…. …and then the untimate shots of a beautiful "Couple in Bliss".

Some gear philosophy, a tour of a temple, more vivid B roll, chilling street shots that put us in the mood for the hot dinner, and cold adult beverage. And then you threw in an earthquake, and a strong one at that! More driving in the morning, gear review, crowds….and then some of the most beautiful video of the cranes. Again, incredibly shots. And finally you topped it off with a tribute to Ueda san. and his photos…

Shaun, I can say with no hesitation that I think this is the very best video you have posted. This offers the best shots of subjects, a complete photo and history adventure. And not only that, in my opinion, it is one of the best photography videos on YouTube. I will be watching this video again and again, I'm sure. Congratulations, and thank you very much for this experience!

  4. Your video made Guts bark at the TV with the emergency beeps!! I used to love taking my camera everywhere.

  5. Wonderful images. You really captured them beautifully. The cranes are definitely on my bucket list too!

  6. Talk about a photography journey. The cranes. The storm. An earthquake. What a ride. What a fantastic episode. Absolutely well done. And your photographs were stunning. I also found the slideshow at the end very moving and very beautiful.
