Ishikawa Prefecture, the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen route between Tokyo and Kanazawa, Ishikawa’s capital, in March 2015 has skyrocketed Ishikawa up the list of popular domestic and overseas tourist destinations.
This means that the breathtaking Kenroku-en is more easily accessible, as is Myoryu-ji (also known as the Ninja Temple).
The view of the Senmaida (1000 Rice Fields) adjacent to the Sea of Japan is absolutely fabulous, while Ishikawa is also home to delicious seafood, and relaxing hot springs, as well as many ski slopes in the winter season.
Fukui Prefecture, rich with historically and culturally important sites. The Ichijodani Asakura Ruins contain ruins from the Sengoku Period over 500 years ago, while Maruoka Castle is the oldest remaining castle in Japan today. The Fukui Dinosaur Museum ranks among the most impressive of its kind in the world. But perhaps the most significant Fukui destinations are Eiheiji, one of the two main temples of Zen Buddhism, and the breathtaking Tojinbo cliffs.
Fukui is also known for its good food. Snow crab and mackerel are enjoyed by many in Japan.
Gifu Prefecture, located in the centre of Honshu Main Island, has the distinction of being the place that changed modern Japanese history forever – the Battle of Sekigahara took place in 1600 in the Gifu town of the same name. Gifu still has more than plenty to offer. Shirakawa-go, a World Heritage Site, is beautiful all year round but especially breath-taking in the winter, while Gero Onsen is also a popular destination.
Visiting Takayama, if you can’t make it to Kyoto, affectionately nicknamed “Little Kyoto.” Kuri-kinton, a chestnut sweet and Hida beef are the local delicacy.
Aichi Prefecture, the perfect example of Japan’s perfectly balanced fusion of old and new. Aichi is abundant with history; the first shogun of Japan, Minamoto Yoritomo, and the “Big 3” warlords of Japanese history—Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu—were all born in Aichi. Furthermore, Aichi has by far more temples (roughly 4,650) than any other Japanese prefecture. On the other hand, Aichi is also the industrial capital of Japan, being the home to many major companies, most notably Toyota. Capital of Aichi, Nagoya and its castle, the Toyota Automobile Museum, the unique Meiji Mura, and Legoland Japan. Don’t forget to try their locally well-known miso-flavored dishes!
Shizuoka Prefecture, only couple of train ride from Tokyo, is one of Japan’s most visited prefectures for many reasons.
Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain and one of the country’s most iconic symbols, is located on the prefecture’s northern border; also in the area is the Fuji-san Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine which you may have seen it on many of tourist brochures, the Shiraito Falls, and the beautiful Miho no Matsubara, among others. The scenic Izu Peninsula and Atami are renowned for their hot springs while southern Shizuoka also sports wonderful beaches. And if you want to do some shopping, the Gotemba Premium Outlets contain over 200 stores.
There’s no shortage of good food in Shizuoka, as some of Japan’s best seafood can be found there.
