🕒Recorded in October of 2019
🕒Released on June 9th, 2020
ℹ️About this video:
In this episode, we cover why we do not recommend building your own RV.
After living in our custom-built travel trailer for two and a half months we were frustrated with almost everything and just wanted a new rig. For this reason, we went to the California RV Show to see if we could find something for us.

Hey! We are back on the road and the internet is a bit slow so if it takes us a bit to reply our apologies!
Buy one ?? Why buy ?? All the RVs are Cheaply made and weak weak weak. If you want a solid trailer /tiny home then build your own. A wise man re enforcement of frame and add dually wheels to the axels.to handle the extra weight. It's wise to overbuild. Build it like we build a home. RVs are a joke. Even top line luxury RV and 5th wheel are so weak. So weak. These custom tiny homes built on 5th wheel frames are strong and will outlast any RV or any new trailer. Ask any RV owner and most will agree they regret it and would not buy new again or would rather build it strong and custom made is better than any thing on market that's mass production..
I’m enjoying your honest videos and especially your build series. Can you tell me who to contact about insurance for an travel trailer? You have a beautiful family too
1 reason to build your own rv – is because the value is in the millions. You built it with your bare hands. Be independent.
I can tell you right now without owning one, ever towing one, ever living in one, or stepping inside one – as far as safety is concerned, towing one behind a truck is the DUMBEST thing a person can do – just because it is safe when you are pulling and driving slow, when something happens, you will lose the truck and the RV – so not only you should NOT build one yourself, never have anyone else build for you and never ever – NEVER BUY ONE either – this is the old 1970's "American Dream" which was a stupid dream – everyone saw Chevy Chase Christmas vacation Movie and were like OHHH AN RV, let's get one! no stupid..don't!!
I failed therefore don't try it or you will fail too.
And it sucks to be in America or Europe. Eeeeeverything needs to have seals and certifications and permits and licenses and stuff… oh no, we cannot insurance it 'cause windows, oh no warranty for panels because you've put them on an rv, oh sorry but you can't park here if your rv doesn't have some pedigree xD
I bet your's is built better , will out last all the others !!!
Buy New Cargo Trailer then Build it ( one piece at a time) Or Buy a FlatBed Trailer then Build It ???
build one of you know how to or have guidance, it's better.
If you don't know what you're doing then I agree it's a pain, but for those that know how to do it, it's a great investment because it's so much cheaper and it's custom built for you.
I've done both-I recommend building your own. Commercial RV/campers are low quality.
Where is that accent from?
It's subtle however but clearly it's not American.
I like to build one light enough to pull with station wagon. Does camp grounds ask for rv certificate ?
U could fit 6 folding camping chairs in that useless space along with fishing gear
Oh my! What would posses anyone to want to stay at a high end resort other than ego. We as humans are programmed to build, it's in our DNA and if we have that desire we need to fuel the flame. anyone can finance an RV but whats the fun or the lesson in that? In my opinion RV's are for exploring. traveling yo and staying in places with a little more security than a tent. Building and not getting it right the first time is how we learn. It's also how we teach our children.
Good grief. I'm tired of living my life BECAUSE OF INSURANCE REASONS. In all of my life's disasters, not once has insurance made me whole again. NOT ONCE. In fact almost every time, they DENY THE CLAIM endlessly. Because that's what they do. Insurance is a masterfully organized crime ring. THE PERFECT GRIFT. And it's mandatory. "DUH!" – Norm MacDonald And I had plenty of insurance. I'm 52 years old, and have spent HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON INSURANCE. Claims actually paid: a couple grand when some idiot crashed into my parked car. It's disgusting, and part of the reason this nation is doomed. Freedom. We never had freedom. And never will. We have greed and corruption. Pure evil greed.
Is this just California having these ridiculous restrictions on what RV can be there? I've never heard of this before. What exactly do they think they have to worry about?
Nice work!
This was just poor planning. we build ours from the ground up, no problems. as to weight distribution if you build the modules and have dry and wet weight it's easy with the right software. Warrenties is just a matter of reading before you buy.
I believe Einstein said it best. He said simple is genius.
Living in a RV and the mess I bought. Been in it with my wife for 1 1/2 yrs now. I'm a retired general contractor. Need to look into your materials. Wood is crap if it gets wet and if it gets wet you get wet and black mold. EPDM roofs aren't worth the rubber there made out of silicone far superior product. Foam core composit with two inch core. You get the drift. Sorry it happened to you. But you were right in the beginning.
So you had no clue what you were doing, had no experience in the field and it sounds as though you are just a piss poor planner in general. So with your confession to these points everyone should take your final thoughts and opinions in opposition to building their own as if you now have a bottomless pit of knowledge on it? I think your approach on this video could of been different. I don't feel your lack of knowledge, complacency and incompetence should be what hinders others from seeking out their desire to build their own camper.
I lived for 6 years in two "professional" rv's. They are trash. Home built from steel is heavy but will hold up to Overlanding fulltime living.
first off you didnt build a RV you got a shitty one and tried to make it better more like restoring or modifying. you also start out by saying your completely ignorant about what you need. Sounds like the fail is all you.
I want to wait till tesla gets better car batteries, and I'm going to build a custom wooden RV with leather, fur and silk…
Stipid to put your family in that predicament……
Sounds like just a few things to think about when you're building your own. Guy has no clue…
zeveraar
Can't afford one but i can build one
at least you still look like Andrew Whitworth
Looks nice, I wouldn’t use it as a mobile home but as a camper to go hunting or travel cross country over the summer.
Props to you for the attention paid to weight distribution. I don't think most people even consider it. Beautiful job on the electrical.
I will never buy an RV again, had nothing but issues with a manufactured one and only got to use it about 4 trips and lost quite a bit of money over it. If I ever want one again, I will absolutely build one, I see the issues as challenges and actually don't mind them. The difference also is that there is no chance we will full time with any kids.
Building one definitely requires a darn good model/plan drawn up and lots of research into the design. Imo, the bigger the family, the more carefully the design process needs to be done. I prefer to rebuild a camper and such. RVs, I'd buy one and fix it up or update it if need be. As far as overlanding goes, I'll build my own as that is typically vehicle dependant.
building your own hands down. all the trailers they sell are built worse then china would do. and brand new garbage gives you 1 year warranty because they know they are selling garbage.
Not planning on building a rig but looking at building my own over truck bed camper….so many ideas
Yeah you just suck at building bud sorry 😂
I built my own RV for my ATV. Now that's OFF ROADING! I suggest you all build your own Rv. DO IT!
Can you imagine the balls on this guy… He teaches me to build an RV im half way done with the thing and he releases this video telling me to go buy one now. What the hell about the rest of my build guy how am I gonna finish this thing? 😂
factory built rv's have a serious lack of quality. Exceptions are the fiberglass manufactures such as Escape in BC and Kimberly Kampers, Oliver, Casita and Cortes and a few others.
@3:45 is literally when he gets to the point 🙄🙄
Excellent pointers! My situation: Age! I retired 5 yrs ago and wanted to get back into camping after 20 years since my last-other than van camping o fishing trips. I really considered taking on what you did or doing a schoolie. Considering my other endeavors I came to realize I'd probably spend maybe 2 years doing a camper and that was 2 years at my age I didn't want to sacrifice when I could be spending that time traveling and camping. I found a 3yr old 26ft travel trailer with excellent floor plan and awesome huge storage below. The owners had only used it 6 times; any issues had already been addressed, literally same as new for 60% the price of a new one. I arrived at the 26ft length after considering the total length with my 4dr half-ton I would be at like 50' in total length. Maneuvering in some campgrounds is a hassle as it is without dealing with 65-70 feet in total length as well as the lengthlimitsin some parks. Camper weight consideration led me to my purchase. At 5,000 pounds + added weight brought me to about 60% of my maximum towing capacity. I was looking at longevity of my new 1500 Ram truck. For me personally considering my intended amount of use I could not justify investing $200k in a new diesel truck and large camper. My truck is my daily driver, so I only have the $10k additional cost of the so far great slightly used travel trailer and I get 9-10 mpg's cruising down the road. In my spare time I can spend some on any upgrades or customizations I want to do. It was all about compromising according to one's own personal situation and intended use. At age 65 now, I had a good couple of years camping with the children and or grandchildren in the otherwise time it would have taken me to build one. I became a widower 2 months before my retirement and came to realize how precious time, the one thing you cannot buy is. I thunk you did an excellent job on your build BTW and your insights are very helpful for those who may jump before they think it through. I spent a lot of time assessing what would work best for me.
