I love all things snow and ice, so on my last trip to Hokkaido, I decided to seek out anything related to either and experience it firsthand. After doing a little research, I came across one website which talked about a natural phenomenon called “Jewelry Ice” and to be honest, I never heard of such a thing.

“Jewelry ice” occurs only during the winter months in the northeast part of the island and refers to ice formations that appear to sparkle like diamonds or other precious stones. It is formed when water from nearby rivers or lakes freezes and then slightly melts during the day, causing the surface to become extremely smooth. As temperatures drop at night, this smooth surface freezes again, creating a layer of thin ice that reflects the light and gives the appearance of sparkling gems…
