This is a designated special area of the Setonaikai National Park.
The Miyama Battery Ruins is part of the Yura Fortress, which was built in the Meiji period (1868〜1912) along with the batteries in the Tomogashima area and the Yura area of Awaji Island.
At the end of the forest road, there is an observatory where you can see Tomogashima and the Kitan Strait.
On a clear day, you can see the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Shikoku, and it is also known as a scenic spot for the sunset.
The Meiji government, recognizing the importance of the Kitan Strait, set up Western-style gun batteries in the Naruto and Yura districts of Awaji Island, and in the Tomogashima and Kada districts of Wakayama City.
The Imperial Army fortified the area in anticipation of an attack by the Chinese Navy during the Sino-Japanese War and by the Russian Baltic Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War.
(Construction of Yura Fortress started in 1899).
The Miyama Battery (No. 1 Battery), along with the Takurazaki Battery in southern Kada (the area of the present-day Wakayama Municipal Youth International Exchange Center), was a battery installed on the mainland side.
Miyama Battery (Battery 1) was a battery installed on the mainland side along with Takurazaki Battery in southern Kada (the area of the current Wakayama Municipal Youth International Exchange Center), and its mission was to bombard the northwest direction.
After the Sino-Japanese War (the Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty was signed in 1893), construction was completed in 1905 (the Russo-Japanese War began in 1903).
The Miyama Fortress Ruins (1st Battery Ruins), together with the Miyama Fortress Ruins (2nd Gun Battery Ruins) and Miyama Fortress Ruins (Oradani Battery Ruins), are designated as Wakayama City Cultural Properties.
The Miyama No. 1 Battery, which overlooks the Kitan Strait, had an observation post and six German-made 28cm howitzers (Ryudanhou), and remains of its base and ammunition depot remain today.
If you walk further, there is an observatory where you can see Tomogashima Island in front of you.
Miyama Second Battery, completed in 1893, was blown up after the end of the war, and most of the facilities disappeared, and now it is the site of the main building of the popular resort hotel “Kyukamura Kishu-Kada” built in the national park.
You can enjoy the overwhelming scenery from such as (only one underground obscuration part that is presumed to have been used as an ammunition store or gun store remains on the premises).
