Some retirement options abroad include true retirement visas aimed at folks who are of advanced age. Other places let you retire on a resident visa with proof that you have money coming in every month. Of course, there are plenty of countries that want a lot of money from you, but not in this list. We’ll cover Mexico’s Temporary Resident Visa, Ecuador’s Retirement and Investor Visas, the Philippines’ SRRV Visa, Costa Rica’s Pensionado Program, Panama’s Pension Program, Nicaragua’s Pension Program, Thailand’s Retirement Visa, Mauritius’ Retirement Program, and we’ll cover a range of locations and cultures that might work as a good place to settle down once you cash in your pension. 1. Fun fact: Costaricans got their “pura vida” slogan from a Mexican movie. Mexican comedian “clavillazo” coined the phrase and used it throughout his entire career.

  2. Mauritius is not a place for poor retirees/low pensions. Go visit and find out.

  3. the biggest problem, is language, in the Americas is spanish, only in Phillipine everything is in english and easy to understand, my opinion thats the biggest advance for retirement….

  4. All the countries you mention are the pits to live; corrupt and run by the drug cartels. I’ve been to all of them to check them out and nope!

  5. As usual, the discussion of Thailand is misleading by omission. Thailand actively discourages low-income retirees by a thousand cuts, i.e. their rules change capriciously, you have to report every 30 days, overstays are rewarded with jail time in the Immigration Detection Center, until you can come up with enough cash for a plane ticket bask to your home country, etc. Thai laws are deliberately vague and contradictory, so they can decide to toss you on any pretext at any time. You can not do ANY work without a work permit, which includes volunteering to help Thai people (see tsunami volunteer experiences), and such permits are notoriously difficult to negotiate. You will need a lawyer, absolutely, unless you are employed by a Thai company, where age discrimination is par for the course. You will be required to have approved medical insurance, at your own expense, which is sketchy if you ever actually need it. Pre-existing conditions are not covered…"etc., etc., etc"… (to quote King Monkut, in "The King and I", which was banned in Thailand for showing an English schoolteacher shaming the King).

Thailand would prefer that you bring lots of money, spend it quickly, and then go home. Rinse and repeat…oh and if you have a LOT of money, you can buy a Thai Elite membership, which lets you have a 5-year (or 10 year, for double a LOT of money) visa. but low-income retirees need not apply.

    Oh, and the language…

All that said, I did it for 8 years, speak Thai passibly, and only gave up when they refused a tourist visa for my Filipino wife.

It's a great life there but you will never feel secure as a low-income retiree in Thailand.

  6. Are you saying as a retiree you pay these countries that fee or they just require you receive that much so that you won't be a burden on their social programs?

  7. Living in the cities of Thailand like Bangkok is not cheap, it’s much cheaper choosing a rural town. Also Indonesia is much more cheaper to live at than either Thailand or the Philippines.

  8. I would like to know what it would cost in these countries to live comfortably. Getting a pension is one thing but how much would I need to live?

  9. A Philippines SRRV requires $1,000/month, not 800. I have one. Ecuador is $1275. Makes me wonder what other information here is wrong. Likely most of it.

  10. I think you'll find that retirement in Thailand at 50+ now requires 800000 Thai baht or a proven income of 65000 Thai baht per month.
Very few people can now prove their income through their embassies.
UK will not provide an income letter in Thailand.

  11. When most of us arrive on the US border we will face a border control officer. We probably will be arrested and or immideatly turned around and banned for entry into the US if we mention we came to settle down in the US. How can you guys think you are welcome around the world? I would not bet on getting free pass to stay for more than 3 months anywere in the world. Just a guess…

  12. Auweia Ami stay at Home no place to hide belive me nobody want a Ami or European anywhere in the world I have a good expirienz phillipines wat Are Rassist Country not Europe best is Austria good food best air no crowdet places and the most importent jou can drink water the most importent thing in the world water not money can be find here easy but Amerika wat a horror if jou going sick happy trip in all the 3 world country the a not wort it it’s totally true find out 2 place phillipines about criminal 1 Mexico think about

  13. Pensioners in New Zealand will only receive 6 months of pension should they leave the country, they must come back to NZ for another 6 months or will lose pension, the Gov'ts way of getting some money back, even though they say its your money, you earned it over the years you worked. Rules out retiring overseas on a NZ pension.

  14. the best thing for US Americans is to stay in their own country and transform it into a social democracy where the low income earners are no longer robbed.
You guys always claim the US is the best the world has to offer …. The land of milk and honey …. So why not live there ?
In South America nobody waits for the gringos ….

  15. Dangerous country's to live in : Mexico. Ecuator Argentina "High Crime Rates" . Cross fire in those country's could be see often in specific places (could be random too) Public health have a short resources . Often strikes by unions. Often road accidents due to Alcohol and drugs users plus those driven with anger due a luck of economical crisis. Money cannot buy any thing . Better to stay safe .

  16. I didn’t think Americans could own property in Mexico only lease it for their life time. Isn’t Costa Rica the birth place of MS 13

  17. I think something like 70% of the people in Panama steal there electricity they would just be happy you pay for yours.

  18. Many African War Criminals and East European Sex Slavers have retired to the UK and have found everything to be free even with their £10 Million Bank Accounts hidden away, back home, where their other retirement homes are situated .
The British Conservative Government have even imported many of the Sex Slave girls so business can carry on.

  19. Phuket is mega expensive compared to Bangkok, i lived there for 4.5 years, a taxi is 6 times the cost of one in Bkk!!

  20. Might as well retire @ SAN Quentin prison….or near a mortuary…these countries suc
All you did is Google some research trying to make yourself a hero you didn’t even mention Spain

Glad we don’t need any more phony idiots

  21. Regarding Costa Rica – what they don't tell you is that this "green" electricity is often interrupted. I guess that's considered going green – in a backhanded way.

  22. so that you know the philippines has change there retirement age there is no long retire age from from 35 and up to retire in the philippines now you do need to be over 50 years of age now. if you are below the age of 50 you can not be on any of the retirement plans any more.
