The Nakasen-do trail is the old mountain route that connects Tokyo and Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Because of the restrictions by the shogunate, travelers had to make their trips on foot. As a result, “juku (inns)”were developed every few kilometers to provide travelers with places to rest, eat, and stay during their journey.A total of 69 inns were developed along the 526-km Nakasendo Road.
Magome-juku is the 43rd of 69 inn towns. It is a well-preserved old town on a hillside along a stone-paved slope.Along the Magome trail, you will find a delightful little restaurant, snack stores, souvenir stores, and traditional inns. One of the highlights is the restored houses stretching along the town’s sloped main street.
