Glover Garden is a relocation of several western historical buildings from Japan’s opening to the West from the late 19th & early 20th centuries. It focuses on Thomas Glover, a Scottish merchant who sold weapons and ships to the anti-shogunate clans and played an important role in the modernization of Japan (not to mention the forerunner brewery to what is now Kirin Beer). The relocation was done in 1974 from buildings all over Nagasaki City, so it’s not like everything was there from the beginning. But you can see a 19th century home and lifestyle as well as a grand view of Nagasaki from the hillside. Over 2 million people visit the place annually and aside from the Peace Park, is one of the most visited places in Nagasaki.
