Buying a Rail Pass Inside Japan

RESTRICTIONS:
Keep in mind that you cannot ride on the Nozomi or Mizuho lines. (The Nozomi line goes between Osaka and Tokyo, and the Mizuho line runs from Shin-Osaka.) This isn’t a big problem, though. There are other trains you can take instead. The Nozomi and Mizuho are restricted because they’re just a little faster.

  1. I plan to go to Tokyo to start and then do a Southern and then a Northern Leg of the trip. With Tokyo as the hub. Hokkaido is where I will spend a good month looking for a Uni to try to teach English at. I do have an MA. Can I get 2 sets of the 21 days sets for one 3 month trip?

  2. Also paying a little extra for a JR Pass Green Car is really worth it. Me and my friends did , it was like 80$ USD extra for a 7 days pass and you can reserve seats for no extra cost. Seats are bigger , lots of leg room , 2 tray tables and place to plug all your electronics.

  3. They should do a train for night ride …. like the box cube hotels… so tourist can travel by night sleeping and got more time to see other city's.
    Great info.

  4. i wonder if, with being able to get the pass without the voucher, it would be possible to get more than one pass during a longer stay. the next time i go to japan, i'm planning to stay for the full 90 days. it would be awesome to be able to get a pass for more than just a single 21 day block. having the pass makes a huge difference in saving money since we take multiple shinkansen trips. hmmmmm….

  5. I did the JR railpass twice and it was a great experience. It depends a lot on the itinerary. On my 3rd trip it worked out much better to take 1 shinkansen and then private railways in Kansai and the Tokyo area. (Nankai, Kintetsu & Tobu). My main concern is that you need to use the pass during 7 consecutive days or more. It would be much better if it was like the European InterRail or Eurail where you can use it a certain number of days within a month!

  6. How flexible are Jr offices with reserving seats close to train departures? example: We are coming into Tokyo for one night then the next day going to Osaka, I figure it makes sense to activate it the day we go to Osaka since we have 9 days in Japan. Then a second question would be is it fairly easy to sporadically take the train, say if I wanted to do a day trip from Osaka to Nara, or Kyoto etc? Thoughts appreciated.

  7. I recently used a Hokkaido rail pass but the good advice given equally applies. My experience was that except on local trains most of the carriages had reserved seats. That made the unreserved carriage very crowded. So I would recommend getting a reserved seat whenever possible – as mentioned in the video for peace of mind. I discovered two things about Japanese carriages; there is very limited for luggage and most locals like to have the curtains closed. So you could be travelling along a very scenic section of railway and most passengers are sitting with the curtains closed – and either asleep or playing with their smart phones. Also in Hokkaido (I can't speak for elsewhere in Japan, as yet) there were few escalators or ramps so quite often you were climbing rather steep steps often without handrails.

  8. Can I use the Jr pass to travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima? Cause I only see Shinkansen Nozomi routes, and I believe you can’t use those Shinkansen with the JR Pass?

  9. So if I vhoose to activate the pass later on in my stay would I have to go back to the airport or any information place to activate the pass? Or is it automatic. How does reservation look like during golden week? Is it hard to book?

  10. Hello sir , question is jr passes only for foreigners temporary visitors.which train pass for Japanese resident people same like as jr passes.and what is charges. Suggest which is best pass for travellers all sightseeing main point covered.
