I make it a point to only splurge on one meal then eat street food or buy at convenience store for the other meals. I could also take a local train to Kyoto station but decided to take the bullet train because it is still inexpensive compared to a longer trip like Tokyo. We were able to experience the Shinkansen on a budget.
