Kawazuzakura bloom earlier than most cherry blossoms, typically around early February.
They’re named after the town Kawazu where they were first discovered, in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The MiuraKaigan cherry blossom festival is approx. 2hrs from Tokyo by train and is a great way to get your cherry blossom fix if you happen to visit Japan before the traditional sakura season starts.
In 2023, the official festival dates are 2023.02.05 – 2023.03.12.
